Opening Data Tower 7.7 Megawatt

This week Nina Tellegen, director of the Amsterdam Economic Board, opened the Amsterdam Data Tower located at the Sciencepark. She is pleased with the tower as it strengthens the ecosystem and expands the data storage capacity with 7.7 megawatt.

According to Tellegen: 'Digital connectivity is one of the 5 urban challenges the board works on. To become one of the most innovative regions of Europe we do need datatowers such as the one built by digital realty that we are about to open.

The high digital connectivity makes Amsterdam a very attractive location and a European data hotspot – from Amsterdam companies can reach 80% of Europe in just 50 miliseconds. The Amsterdam metropolitan area houses almost 70 datacenters, and this number is growing fast. With 13% increase in capacity in 2015 we’re outpacing our European competitors – Frankfurt and London. The Amsterdam Science Park is a jewel for the region. More than 90 companies are based here and the presence of the Amsterdam Internet Exchange is an important factor in the decision of other companies to establish their business here. The combination of beta science knowledge institutes and initiatives such as SURFsara and the Netherlands science Center make this into a very vibrant and innovative area of which Amsterdam can be very proud.

More and more international companies discover the power of the Dutch digital infrastructure and enter the European market via Amsterdam. This data tower forms an important expansion and strengthens the eco-system. We need to cherish this eco-system as international competition is fierce. Herein lies a responsibility for companies and governments together, too long datacenters and related digital infrastructure has been seen as a business matter only. Recently the Dutch parliament appointed the digital infrastructure as our third national mainport – just like Schiphol Airport and the Port of Rotterdam. So we’re making good progress, now we need to join forces to really use this momentum to make it part of our national DNA.'

Amsterdam is investing in innovation and entrepreneurship

Amsterdam-based knowledge institutes and the municipality of Amsterdam are investing heavily to make scientific knowledge and technology available for societal and economic applications

IXA valorisation centre (a collaboration between the University of Amsterdam, Academic Medical Center (AMC), Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, VU University Medical Center Amsterdam and Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences) and the research institutes AMOLF and Nikhef will be collaborating closely in the new programme ‘IXAnext, Talent for innovation’. This collaboration aims to make the knowledge institutes’ knowledge and expertise more readily available for societal and private parties. Together they dedicate themselves to increasing the use and dissemination of knowledge in the region. This will be accomplished among others in the form of Innovation Labs, which will intensify cooperation with the business community and increase the support given to start-ups and spin-offs. By developing this programme, IXA is taking the next step towards professionalising and improving services in the valorisation process.

My first two weeks have passed as new community manager of this platform. I am thrilled to follow our lead Emma van der Veen and together with Nancy Zikken share your projects, events, posts and requests on our social channels, answer your questions and connect you with the people and companies you need to thrive and innovate the city of Amsterdam or simply be inspired.

Every once in a while I'll share an update and insights of this platform, putting them in a broader perspective of the development of smart cities. For opening a window to the future I always believe in taking a look over our shoulders. That's why I'd like to start this weekend with Billie Jean!

Did you know Michael Jackson was ahead of his time publishing his smart city video clip of Billie Jean in 1983? The clip shows the King of Pop moving around a city landscape in which squares light up whenever he passes by. The same goes for the smart lights of the street responding to his presence. Not only did this short film break down MTV's racial barrier as the first video by a black artist to be aired in heavy rotation, it also showed an future vision of a smart city which has become reality.

Check out the smart light project of the Hoekenrodeplein for example: <https://amsterdamsmartcity.com/projects/smart-light>

I hope to inspire you in the future and light your way through our smart city. Does your smart city look like the one in Billie Jean?

Possible partnership with Dharamshala

Dharamshala is selected as a smart city under the smart cities mission in India. Dharamshala Smart City (DSC) has received funding from the central government to develop it as a smart city in the next 5 years. DSC is very keen to collaborate with Netherlands on G2G level, K2K and B2B level. They are also looking at getting experts from Netherlands who can support DSC in urban planning, water, waste, mobility and planning for a smart city. It would be very interesting to explore and Amsterdam smart city would be interested in partnering with DSC and providing knowledge sharing.

Gemeente Amsterdam start eigen beacon netwerk
