Check the article about the Energy Storage System featured in our online magazine 'Smart Stories':

What is the goal of the project?

Amsterdam ArenA, is one of the world’s leading stadiums for sport matches and events. It’s also a living lab enabling rapid development, testing and demonstration of smart applications and solutions. Propelled by the idea of a carbon free future, ArenA is implementing a holistic approach for “zero emission events” including renewable power supply, emission-free integrated public transport solutions and smart car sharing concepts for visitors and employees. ArenA will go a step further and established a company Amsterdam Energy Arena BV to develop and implement an Energy Storage System in the stadium that uses ‘second life’ batteries of Nissan Leaf cars.

What is the result of the project?

The Energy Storage System is aiming for the following functionality that generates revenue, cost savings and CO2 reduction:
• Primary Control Reserve (PCR) services to the TSO
• Local grid services to the DSO
• Backup power services to the ArenA
• Storing and efficient use of the energy generated by the ArenA’s 4.200 solar panels
• Energy efficiency services such as Peak shaving and Peak Shifting
• Vehicle to Grid (V2G) services, such as load management and bidirectional charging

Who initiated the project and which organizations are involved?

The parties involved amongst others are the Amsterdam ArenA, BAM, The Mobility House, AKEF, NISSAN, EATON and is supported by the City of Amsterdam and Interreg North Sea Region – Seev4-City Project.

What is the next step?

The project is currently in the implementation phase and will be operational next half year. In the meanwhile we will start up / initiate new Energy Storage and V2G projects, so if cities or companies are interrested in these technologies please contact us.

What can other cities learn from your project?

We develop an unique 'energy management and ecosystem'
whereby a complex, interactive cooperation between energy storage, energy production, energy consumption and energy services is realized. This innovative solution is a raw model for many companies to power their business in a smarter way.
