Based on that vision, the 1-year exploratory research “Collect Your Retrofits” funded by the KIEM Goci (NWO) and as part of the High-hanging fruit program, brings together knowledge institutions TU Delft (Climate Design and Sustainability), AMS Institute and Superworld, an international Architecture and Strategic Design practice. The project is also supported by the Gemeente Amsterdam and Stichting !WOON.

“Collect Your Retrofits” intends to design a replicable and collective retrofit approach in the context of monumental areas while reframing the cultural notion of energy. The research intends to answer the following questions: How can we unlock the potential of collective retrofitting at scale in the context of historic buildings? And, what would it mean to design collective decision making process of energy as a common resource?

De Koepel in Haarlem is omgetoverd tot een centrum voor cultuur, onderwijs en het bedrijfsleven. De Haarlem campus is een instituut die verschillende opleidingen aanbiedt. Het biedt studenten innovatieve onderwijs- en leerconcepten in een hybride werkomgeving. What:
The AMS Startup Booster is a business idea development and validation program hosted by AMS Institute, aiming to help aspiring entrepreneurs turn their gut feeling into a business. The entrepreneurs are expected to pursue an impact-driven startup in the field of urban tech.

Lasting over 4-months, the AMS Startup Booster 2022-23 will start on Oct 2022 and run until Feb 2023. The program will be hybrid, mainly physical at the AMS Institute (Marineterrein, Amsterdam). The program is most effective when all teams are fully committed so during the aforementioned time period there is a minimum requirement of 16 hours per week for each startup.

Program:
The program consists of more than 12 workshops focusing on customer discovery and problem-solution fit. During these workshops, the following topics will be addressed:

• Research Fundamentals & Problem Definition
• Market Segmentation & Customer Personas
• Customer Discovery
• Value Proposition & Business Model Design
• MVP Design & Prototyping
• Experiment Design
• Pitching

In addition, our complimentary masterclasses will cover topics such as <strong>Team Fit & Alignment, Marketing & Branding, IP Rights, Finance & Funding</strong>, and many more. Peer-to-peer sessions and 1-on-1 coaching will complete the free services we offer to the selected startups. In total, the startups will get a 360 entrepreneurship curriculum consisting of more than 30 workshops & masterclasses.

The primary reason to renovate buildings is to improve indoor climate quality and reduce environmental impact. This can be extremely effective, as 75% of buildings' CO2 emissions are released during the use phase. However, using non-renewable materials during renovation can be entirely counter-productive.

Veel gebruiksvoorwerpen die we ons dagelijks leven nodig hebben, worden gemaakt met complexe gereedschappen achter de gesloten deuren van grote bedrijven. Wat als wij consumenten die gereedschappen en machines zoals zaagmachines, boren en frezen zelf zouden kunnen maken? Wat verandert er in de positie van de consument? Hoe kun je een bedrijf runnen met kennis en technologie die voor iedereen beschikbaar is?  

Waag en Mekanika slaan de handen ineen voor een publieksprogramma rondom zogeheten: open source hardware en collaborative design. Simpel gezegd: gratis beschikbare blauwdrukken en ontwerp vanuit samenwerking in plaats van marktcompetitie. De avond is de feestelijke afsluiting van een tweedaagse design marathon in de Waag. In deze twee dagen ontwerpen deelnemers zo’n gratis beschikbare blauwdruk. Tijdens de avond wordt de winnaar van de design marathon bekend gemaakt. Daarna gaat een panel van experts  in gesprek over de toekomst van ontwerp, hardware en nieuwe business modellen.

• Carolina Espinoza is een industrieel ontwerper uit Chili en werkt als ontwerp- en projectmanager voor de non-profitorganisatie Precious Plastic, die gereedschappen en machines ontwikkelt om plastic op kleine schaal te recyclen. De kennis wordt online gedeeld, open source en gratis voor iedereen om te gebruiken en een lokaal recyclingbedrijf te starten.
• Daniele Ingrassia is sinds 2017 een wereldwijde Fab Lab-mentor en is de oprichter van InMachines Ingrassia GmbH, een in Duitsland gevestigd bedrijf dat open source digitale fabricagemachines ontwikkelt en verkoopt. Het bedrijf is betrokken bij Fab City Hamburg, voor de ontwikkeling van de Open Lab Starter Kit, een complete set open source machines voor Open Labs.
• Trammell Hudson is lange tijd aangesloten geweest bij NYC Resistor-hackerspace en houdt ervan dingen uit elkaar te halen en te documenteren hoe ze werken. Hij gebruikt zijn reverse engineering-vaardigheden om interoperabiliteit tussen apparaten tot stand te brengen en heeft open source-firmware uitgebracht voor digitale camera's, gloeilampen, laptops en vele andere consumentenproducten.
• Henk Buursen werkt sinds 2000 voor Waag, waar hij begon als GNU/Linux-systeembeheerder. Sinds enkele jaren is hij de beheerder en lab lead van het Fablab in de Waag. Henk is instructeur van Fab Academy, het wereldwijde gedistribueerde opleidingsprogramma in digitale fabricage, en leidt jaarlijks tientallen deelnemers op in het maken van 'almost anything'.

Open Next
Deze design marathon is onderdeel van het Europese project Open Next. Hierin onderzoekt Waag samen met internationale partners hoe we gesloten massaproductie kunnen veranderen in een een proces dat toegankelijk is voor de consument, die daarmee meer zeggenschap heeft over het uiteindelijke product.

1. Energy Junkies exhibition  at Nemo The Studio
Our  dependence on fossil fuels and the effects of our energy consumption on climate change are the focus of NEMO’s new exhibition for adults: Energy Junkies. NEMO invites you to explore the decisions that will determine our future. How would you transform our energy addiction into a healthy habit? Create your own carbon diet, choose the right medicines from the climate pharmacy and dream about a world where we are cured of our energy addiction. Visit Energy Junkies at NEMO’s Studio, the off-site location for adults on the Marineterrein in Amsterdam.
 
Energy Junkies is open from Wednesday – Sunday, from 12:00 – 17:30 until July 2023. Costs are € 7,50

2. Interactive installation Senses of Amsterdam at OBA Slotermeer
The municipality of Amsterdam is using more and more new technologies to make the city more liveable and safe. But what do these sensors actually measure? And what happens with the data they collect? What does this mean for the people of Amsterdam? The installation Senses of Amsterdam informs visitors about how sensors make Amsterdam a smarter city, what measurements are taken and how data is collected. The interactive installation by the Responsible Sensing Lab  is currently exhibited at the public library (OBA) in Slotermeer.

3. Study excursion about trends and innovations in Amsterdam’s cycling infrastructure
Yes, the Dutch and their bikes are inseparable! And Amsterdam is often cited as the cycling capital of the world. Are you interested in how Amsterdam is innovating in the areas of cycling and urban mobility? Join the study excursion organised by the Urban Cycling Institute and Bicycle User Experience (BUX). The two-hour excursion (by bicycle, of course!) brings you to key  locations exemplifying Amsterdam’s innovative approach to cycling infrastructure and policy. You will meet internationally-oriented cycling experts and become part of a larger network of  the Urban Cycling Institute and Bicycle User Experience (BUX).
 
The study excursions take place on Saturdays, August 13, 20 and 27 from 16:00 – 18:00. Costs are € 50,00 per person.

4. Exhibition Fluid Matter in the Architecture Centre of Amsterdam (ARCAM)
The Amsterdam water system regulates water levels and quality in one of Europe’s  most densely populated areas. Due to the urban growth and climate change, the system will be increasingly strained in the future. This means that different design choices have to be made, but this situation also offers opportunities for new ways of dealing with water. What choices do we have? How can we design with the water? In the interactive exhibition Fluid Matter, you will discover this complex water system through scale models of four urban districts of Amsterdam: Houthavens/Haven-Stad, North/Schoonschip, City Centre/Kattenburg and IJburg/IJmeer.

Visit the Exhibition Fluid Matter from Tuesday – Sunday (13:00-17:00) until November 2022. Costs are € 4,00.

5. Johan Cruijff ArenA Innovation Tour
Take a tour into the world of innovations at the Johan Cruijff ArenA!  With thousands of visitors during large events, the home of Ajax becomes a small smart city. Already recognized as one of the most sustainable stadiums in the world, the Johan Cruijff ArenA is also one of Amsterdam’s premier living labs for energy, mobility, security, and visitor experience innovations.  The Johan Cruijff ArenA offers private tours showcasing innovative approaches and solutions for the stadium of tomorrow, ideal for team building events and (inter)national delegation visits.

The Johan Cruijff ArenA’s Innovation Tours last ~45minutes and can be booked by sending a request to tour@johancruijffarena.nl with “Innovation Tour” in the subject line. Costs are €24,38 excl. VAT per person, with minimum of 20 persons per group.

6. Floriade Expo 2022, Almere      
Once every ten years, all the horticultural greats gather during the Floriade. Experts from all over the world come together to present green solutions that make our cities more enjoyable, beautiful and sustainable. With the theme of ‘Growing Green Cities’, more than 400 national and international participants showcase their latest green innovations, solutions and applications. From state-of-the-art solar roof tiles to amazing vertical façade gardens and from the best ways to grow tomatoes to the latest pruning techniques. You can see, taste and experience it all at Floriade in Almere.

7. Exhibition Makers of Noord by Waag
From large goods to small workshops, makers have always been an important part of Amsterdam Noord. Scattered throughout the district you will find individual makers and collectives, craftsmen and creative entrepreneurs. Their future in the city is under pressure, partly due to gentrification. On the other hand, the city heavily depends on these makers to cope with the energy transition and the enormous demand for housing. The good news is that many makers are still located in Amsterdam, and in particular in Noord. Who are these makers of Noord, what do they make, and how does this contribute to the city, the neighbourhood, and our lives? Get to know different makers from Noord and listen to their inspiring stories about re-use, sustainability and traditional craftsmanship.
 
The Makers of Noord exhibition can be visited in Museum Amsterdam Noord from Thursday – Sunday from 13:00 – 17:00 until August 27. Costs are €4,00.

Learn the basics of the Aquaponics farming method.

The workshop takes through our 85 sq m greenhouse that hosts various methods of growing with Aquaponics (Deep Water Culture, Media Bed, NFT, Dutch Buckets, Towers, and a Wicking bed - all part of the same system).

Of course, we will not forget the fish and we will take you through our basic aquaculture setup - 2 round fish tanks of 1000 L, each equipped with 750 L mechanical filters and the sump which also acts as a filter.
The course gives you a good start on the journey into aquaponics.

Voor ons kleine, gedreven team bestaande uit vijf mensen, zijn wij per direct op zoek naar een mensgerichte, verbindende operationeel manager ad interim. Het betreft een tijdelijke functie voor 20 – 24 uur per week voor een periode van (naar verwachting) 4 – 6 maanden.

Amsterdam Smart City, onderdeel van de Amsterdam Economic Board, is een innovatieplatform dat de metropoolregio van Amsterdam helpt om samenwerking en kennisdeling te realiseren op grootstedelijke vraagstukken. Dit doen wij met een divers netwerk van 27 partners die zich committeren aan een betere, duurzame en toekomstbestendige wereld. Deze partners zijn overheden, maatschappelijke organisaties, kennis- en onderwijstellingen en bedrijven. Daarnaast beheren we een internationale community van meer dan 8000 pioniers, innovatieprofessionals en koplopers die elkaar op de verschillende thema’s ontmoeten en verder helpen. Door al deze partijen te verbinden, en met hen het gesprek te voeren over de grote uitdagingen in onze regio, komen we tot innovatieve oplossingen die bijdragen aan betere straten, buurten en steden.

Wat vragen we van jou?
In deze rol ben je verantwoordelijk voor de dagelijkse aansturing van het Amsterdam Smart City kernteam. Je coacht en begeleidt de individuele teamleden en zorgt voor overzicht en structuur. Je bent een coachende leidinggevende die het leuk vindt om met jonge mensen te werken en je hebt een groot gevoel voor teambuiling. Je plant en denkt vooruit, neemt graag het voortouw en je zorgt voor verbinding en vooruitgang. Tevens werk je nauw samen met de programmadirecteur van Amsterdam Smart City die vooral het gezicht naar buiten is en de contacten met onze externe partners actief onderhoudt. Je weet een brug te slaan van externe ontwikkelingen naar de interne operatie en processen.

• Je geeft leiding aan het team en begeleidt en coacht het team bij de uitvoering van het werk;
• Je ziet toe op de voortgang van dagelijkse werkzaamheden;
• Zo nodig geef je feedback en stuur je bij;
• Je beheert het jaarplan 2022 en maakt met het team afspraken over de planning van werkzaamheden voor de tweede helft van 2022;
• Je zorgt ervoor dat activiteiten conform (kwaliteits)afspraken en planning verlopen;
• Je schrijft een aantal van de werkprocessen verder uit;
• Je zit het wekelijkse teamoverleg en andere interne overleggen voor en zet gemaakte afspraken intern uit;
• Je hebt wekelijks overleg met de programmadirecteur om de interne operatie af te stemmen op externe ontwikkelingen.

The first Circularity Gap Report for the Built Environment in The Netherlands has launched!

The Netherlands has set an ambitious goal: a circular building sector by 2050. However, the built environment in the Netherlands is a massive motor for downcycling. Only 8% of the total material consumption comes from secondary materials.

This report by Metabolic, C-creators, Goldschmeding Foundation and Circle Economy shows new insights and specific actions for businesses, policymakers, urban planners and labour unions to accelerate circularity in the sector.

Reused materials are an important element of circular construction. The more re-used components and recycled materials we use, the fewer virgin materials we need, and the lower our environmental impact. To do so effectively, the supply of reused components and recycled materials should influence the building’s design.

Reduceren (illegale) drones in de stad – Daan Groenink (Gemeente Amsterdam)
De Gemeente Amsterdam detecteert steeds meer (illegale) drones in het luchtruim van Amsterdam. In samenwerking met de politie onderzoekt de gemeente hoe zij het aantal drones kunnen verminderen met zo min mogelijk handhaving. Hoe kan de Gemeente dit het best aanpakken?

Subsidieregeling ketensamenwerking - Suzanne van den Noort (Provincie Noord-Holland)
De provincie is bezig om een subsidieregeling op te stellen om te stimuleren dat meerdere bedrijven in de keten op regionale of bovenregionale schaal gaan samenwerken om circulaire projecten, diensten of processen te realiseren. Hiervoor is een verkenning gedaan om te komen tot een regeling die zo goed mogelijk aansluit op de vraag van bedrijven en dus subsidiëring mogelijk maakt van de activiteiten die de gewenste samenwerking stimuleert. In deze werksessie wil de provincie haar beeld en ideeën verrijken en toetsen om keuzes te kunnen maken hoe de subsidieregeling het beste vorm kan krijgen. Daarnaast speelt de vraag hoe de concept regeling voordat deze in werking treedt kan worden getoetst bij vertegenwoordigers van de doelgroep(en): primair bedrijven.

Digitale Materialenbank - Mark van der Putten (Gem Amsterdam)
In Amsterdam wordt gewerkt aan de implementatie van circulariteit bij ontwerp, inkoop en beheer van de openbare ruimte. Hergebruik is inmiddels verder gedifferentieerd tot ‘Hergebruik, tenzij …’ en wordt in eerste oriëntatie lokaal binnen de projectgrenzen toegepast. Indien er binnen een project geen ruimte is voor het hergebruik, zijn de vrijgekomen assets beschikbaar voor een ander project elders in de stad. Maar zo een uitwissingsproces loopt niet vanzelfsprekend. Aan de basis hiervan ligt uitwisseling van informatie. Hiervoor staat Amsterdam aan de start voor het ontwikkelen van de digitale materialenbank, waarin latende projecten en ontvangende project respectievelijk hun vrijkomende assets en te reserveren assets kenbaar maken

Part of the New European Bauhaus Festival, the Intelligent Cities Challenge will host a side session: Developing circular and sharing economy practices in cities, on Thursday, June 9th at 10.00 to 11.30am CET.

The event will explore the innovative ways five European cities and regions are implementing circularity and sharing solutions to create more liveable and resilient communities.

Amsterdam Metropolitan Region, represented by Space & Matter will share the case of the circular community of Schoonschip, and a vision for scaling up sustainable and citizen-driven communities across Europe via the Crowdbuilding platform.

Alongside Amsterdam Region, best practices and lessons learned will also be shared by fellow ICC cities of Leuven (Belgium), Pescara (Italy), Sofia (Bulgaria) and Porto (Portugal).

van de HvA een onderzoek gestart naar regeneratieve businessmodellen. Graag nodigen we bedrijven die (stappen zetten naar) regeneratief ondernemen
uit voor een ronde-tafel-bijeenkomst, waarbij we o.a. willen onderzoeken welke
vraagstukken en drempels er zijn om regeneratief te ondernemen –
natuurlijk met als doel om versnelling aan te brengen in deze manier van
werken.

 De ‘Regenerative Round Tables’ vinden plaats op donderdag 9
juni van 14.00-17.00 op de HvA Business Campus (Fraijlemaborg 133, Amsterdam).
We gaan in gesprek met regeneratieve ondernemers in de textiel,
landbouw/biodiversiteit, de bouw en de maak- en verpakkingsindustrie.

Speciaal voor de deelnemende makers, ons netwerk en experts op circulair gebied organiseren we een PRICE EXPO borrel. Meld je hier direct aan.
