  • Data commons raken nooit uitgeput.

Shape Amsterdam's Carbon-Neutral Future with MIT!

Featured image

🌍 Join the Senseable Amsterdam Lab (SAL) - a collaboration between AMS Institute and MIT.

📊 Unleash the power of data to design novel climate-neutral solutions.

🔍 Explore real-time environmental monitoring, thermal storage, decarbonizing construction, and water quality sensing technologies.

🚀 Partner with us to pioneer new research tracks for a greener tomorrow.

If you have ideas or suggestions, please reach out to Titus Venverloo - tvenver@mit.edu

The MIT Senseable Amsterdam Laboratory

Sensors embedded throughout the city, and pervading our lives, generate data at unprecedented scales. This gives unique opportunities to understand and design cities in novel ways — for this, we need new methods and tools.

The Senseable Amsterdam Laboratory (SAL) is a groundbreaking research initiative between AMS Institute and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) that challenges what exists today by introducing novel data — and science-based methods to help the City of Amsterdam transition to a carbon-neutral city. SAL research will contribute to improving the quality of life in Amsterdam based on the development of critical scientific research, with the potential of extending its innovations to other cities worldwide.

SAL currently works on 4 research tracks, as listed below. SAL is looking for new research partners to contribute to these tracks or develop new research projects. Research partners could support us financially by joining our research consortium, with large datasets, or as advisory partners. In case you or your organization has ideas about how the unique technical knowledge MIT could contribute to making Amsterdam climate-neutral, feel free to reach out to the MIT Senseable Amsterdam Laboratory lead, Titus Venverloo: tvenver@mit.edu.

Senseable Amsterdam Laboratory Research Tracks

1. Real-time environmental monitoring
We are deploying radically affordable mobile sensors in the urban environment to measure climate-related stresses and hyperlocal greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. In this project, we develop low-cost air quality sensors that are mounted on service vehicles, such as taxis, garbage trucks, and buses. These sensors provide real-time insights into local pollutants, GHG emissions, and climate stresses in Amsterdam.

2. Thermal storage
Develop solutions to harness the cooling and heating power of water in Amsterdam. In addition, by making heating and cooling buildings more efficient in Amsterdam we could have a significant impact on the total CO2 emissions of the city. Hence, in this research, we will explore the potential of aqua thermal storage and exchange solutions in the context of Amsterdam’s historic canal system.

3. Decarbonizing Construction
Here we focus on how novel data collection systems can reduce the GHG emissions from new developments in Amsterdam. Firstly, we collect air quality data around construction sites to evaluate the local impacts of construction. Secondly, we aim to develop AI models that can identify and quantify building components from demolition sites, enabling more reuse in the construction sector.

4. Water Quality Sensing
Due to increasing temperatures - harmful algae can bloom quicker in the canals of Amsterdam. We are developing a state-of-the-art mobile water quality sensor that can identify harmful species of algae, providing a real-time monitor of algae in Amsterdam.

Call for proposals: Responsible Solutions in the Smart City

Featured image

Do you have an innovative idea to tackle ethical challenges in the smart city? We offer financial support and resources to transform your concept into a tangible prototype in the vibrant city of Amsterdam.

Deadline: September 14

The Need for Practical Examples of Value Design

Amsterdam increasingly harnesses the power of digital technologies like sensors, platforms, and algorithms to efficiently manage and maintain various aspects of city life. Think about traffic, public spaces, law and order.

At the same time, implementing digital technologies may lead to unintended side effects for citizens and can compromise public values. Ensuring responsible and ethical practices becomes imperative. The city has embraced the TADA values since 2016. Also it states that transparency, understandability, human dignity, autonomy, and privacy, are guiding principles for smart city solutions. So, what does this look like concretely?

Today, we still lack practical examples of how these values can be effectively designed and integrated into smart city systems.

Who We're Seeking

We are actively looking for TU Delft academics who can offer fresh perspectives and innovative ideas to bridge the gap between public values and smart city technology. If you are passionate about shaping responsible solutions and have expertise in the digital technology domain, we invite you to join us.

What's in it for You

Participating in our Call for Proposals offers a range of benefits tailored to your academic journey:

  • Academic Research Opportunities: Through prototyping, your research can gain new dimensions, opening doors to potential publications and enhancing your academic profile;
  • Partnership with the City of Amsterdam: Successful proposals may lead to partnerships with the City of Amsterdam, providing a unique opportunity to test your solution and measure its impact in a real-world context;
  • Consortium Building: Your participation in this Call for Proposals can be a significant step toward forming a consortium for future grant applications, leveraging the collective expertise of various stakeholders;
  • Professional Support: If selected, you will receive support from a Responsible Sensing Lab (RSL) producer, who will guide you in prototyping and testing your idea.

The Winning Proposal

The winning proposal will receive a budget to prototype their concept with the assistance of a Responsible Sensing Lab (RSL) producer. This includes the production of a prototype as well as communication materials such as a short movie, animation, and professional photoshoot. Once the prototype is completed, we will facilitate your introduction to the relevant department at the municipality of Amsterdam for the presentation of your idea.

The prizes for the competition are as follows:

First prize: A production budget of 20,000 euros

Second prize: A production budget of 10,000 euros

Furthermore, winners will receive collaboration support with the city of Amsterdam and assistance in producing communication materials for their solution/prototype. The allocated budget can be utilized to hire a design agency, prototyping firm, software developer, or other relevant professionals. The RSL producer will work in collaboration with you to manage the budget effectively.

About Us

Responsible Sensing Lab is dedicated to envisioning, designing, and testing alternative versions of digital technology in cities based on public values. While we have primarily focused on privacy and transparency, we are eager to explore the practical implementation of other values in smart city technology. Our portfolio boasts several successful prototypes, and we are excited to embark on new collaborations that push the boundaries of responsible sensing practices.

Responsible Sensing Lab is initiated by the City of Amsterdam and AMS Institute. For this Call for Proposals we collaborate closely with TU Delft.

Smart Media Production is looking for a partner

Featured image

The associate degree program Smart Media Production of the University of applied science of Amsterdam is looking for a partner for an exciting project exploring the future of smart technologies for the city of Amsterdam. We teach students how to use smart technology (AI, machine learning, generative content) to create dynamic content in an ethical way. In short: we train the content creators of the future.

From September to December we ask students to research and come up with a future vision of Amsterdam in which smart technologies are used in an ethical way to benefit the city of Amsterdam. They will create a website, podcast, articles, and future vision video to share their insights. We are looking for a partner who can provide context and a narrowed-down theme so the students can do a deeper exploration.

What are we looking for in a partner?

  • Providing a briefing and case with a design question. For example: How does the future of "X" look like for target group "Y" concerning the topic "Z"? Which for example can result in: How does the future of Amsterdam look like for car owners and making the city more sustainable with the use of smart technologies?
  • Attending the halfway and final presentations
  • Strong interest in smart technologies and ethical considerations about the impact on the society
  • Availability to dedicate time (about 6 hours total between September-December) and effort to the project

What can you expect from us?

  • Collaborative project work with 15 like-minded students and 3 lecturers
  • A fresh perspective on the use of smart technologies and the future
  • A website, podcast, articles, and future video about your design question.

If you are interested in partnering with us for this exciting project, please reach out @ r.goossens@hva.nl
