Portfolio-holder The Hague: ‘We are the Secure Digital Gateway to Europe’

To what extent can Amsterdam and The Hague help each other?

While the worldwide attack by the Wannacry ransomware is still fresh in our memory, the city of The Hague once again underlines the importance of internet security and privacy. The Hague, the City of Peace and Justice, is emphatically presenting itself as the Secure Digital Gateway to Europe. “These days you can no longer solve problems on your own, you must cooperate and innovate.”

The Judicial Capital already is exemplary regarding cooperation. No less than 260 partners collaborate in the so-called Hague Security Delta. The town is now also organising MoCo The Hague, during which three speakers will shine a light on the approach to privacy and security on the internet. The Hague portfolio-holder Saskia Bruines, “By organising events and meetings, I hope that people will acquire the knowledge which they can use in their own organisation, and I also hope that they meet other relevant people to cooperate with.”

Fighting a running battle - New Dutch homes still get gas connections.

While many cities in the Netherlands want to go 'off grid' and disconnect their buildings from the gas network, the odd situation arises that 60% of the newly build homes between 2017-2021 will have a gas connection. This is due to the 'right to be connected to gas' in the Dutch gas law.

New business models: sustainable energy for the masses

Featured image

GreenBuzz Amsterdam wants to enable professionals to make sustainability the new norm in business and society through their daily work. We do this by organising network events, where professionals can meet, share their ideas and challenges and get inspired by pioneers from several industries.

Each event we organize focuses on a different industry. This time we will look at businesses that have the potential to turn sustainable ideas into business models for the mass market. The industry we will focus on during this event is the energy industry.

Join us on the 21st and get inspired during this network event!

Our first confirmed speaker is Chiel van Leeuwen, Business Development Guru @ Vandebron. The mission of Vandebron is to move as fast as possible towards 100% sustainable energy by connecting consumers directly to producers of clean energy. Their online marketplace brings together many small players to create the scale to be relevant in the market. So far, the company provides over 80,000 households with access to clean energy.

Our second speaker is Hubert Spruijt, Co-Founder & Business Analyst @ Senfal, and a long time member of the GreenBuzz network! Senfal develops software that helps align energy demand with energy production, allowing for an energyprofile that moves in accordance with market prices. This has some interesting implications for sustainable energy sources since storage problems can be partially overcome.

Heating houses with cloud servers! (in Dutch)

Grote dromen beginnen klein.

Who owns the smart city's data?

City authorities need to enhance public-private cooperation to build sustainable urban transformation agendas. Private sector introduces innovation, talent and provide capital to the urban development process, while playing a leading role in design, implementation, operations and maintenance, and sustainability of the urban development and services initiatives. But it seems that everywhere private companies are exploiting data which should be in the public domain.

Google, Apple, Facebook, Fitbit, Snap, Amazon and Uber – they all probably know more about you than the authorities do. And let’s be clear: they are not aiding the government and its citizens to have a healthier, more sustainable existence.

What is your opinion? Read more in the article below.

Revolution in public transport: China’s smart bus

The world’s first virtual train track is unveiled in China. The smart bus, or driverless train, is equipped with sensors that can read the dimensions of roads and plan its own route. Like a train, it’s modular and carriages can be added on; but like a bus, it runs on the road. It follows white-dotted lines on the road, and therefore a train track does not need to be laid. This makes the infrastructure much cheaper and therefore accessible to many more cities than standard railways or metro systems.
