On Monday 12 september 2016 no less than two French delegations visited Amsterdam Smart City. A group of City Directors coming from all over France and its overseas territories was particularly interested in how Amsterdam Smart City is organised and how it interacts with local and regional governments. Next to that, the interaction with citizens was also a point of interest.

We presented the Amsterdam Smart City approach and several examples of bottom-up initiatives. After that, we zoomed in on the EU project City-zen.

We held interesting discussions about the way to involve citizens. In the Amsterdam Smart City projects, generally the so-called early adopters and early majority, try to proof that the applied innovations work. Other parties, like the municipalities themselves, but also business partners, could take up working innovations afterwards. Also intellectual property and cooperation with business partners was discussed. Amsterdam Smart City’s philosophy is to keep everything as open as is reasonably possible, avoiding a technology lock-in at all costs.

After this group, a delegation of the Crédit Agricole Banque from the Haute-Normandie region met Amsterdam Smart City, after visiting among others circular economy living lab De Ceuvel and the Port of Rotterdam. The bankers where interested to see the energy transition and circular economy initiatives in the Amsterdam Metropolitan Area. The discussions were centered around the role of banks in the replication and upscaling of innovative solutions.

Hoe zet ik de energietransitie op een slimme manier in voor gebiedsontwikkelingen en transformaties, bijvoorbeeld bij de revitalisering van woonwijken, herbestemming van boerenerven, natuurbeheer of transformatie van werklocaties? Overseas student seeking internship in sustainable development

My name is Dillion Asher, and I am an American student pursuing my masters degree in International Development at the University of Pittsburgh. I am reaching out to Amsterdam Smart City's network in an effort to identity internship opportunities in sustainable development for an overseas student like myself. As my future goal is to attain an internship in the Netherlands (and to relocate for permanent employment upon graduation), I am collecting information on local career opportunities in sustainability. Some of the questions I hope to answer through my inquiries include:

- Are internship/employment opportunities generally available to non-EU students/foreign nationals?

- Which NGOs, companies, or public institutions might I communicate with to discuss a potential internship, or even a collaborative research partnership while in school?

- What types of knowledge, skills, training, or experience might be recommended or desired for a student interested in a career in sustainable development?

- Are there any university courses or degree programs in the Netherlands that are particularly valued for skill development and training with respect to sustainable development?

- What are the biggest future challenges to urban planning and sustainability work in the Netherlands?

If there are any individuals out there in Amsterdam Smart City's network who may be in a position to offer guidance, advice, or perhaps a referral to other sources of information, I would be most grateful for the assistance to my search! Please feel free to comment, and to reach out with any questions you may have about my interests, goals, future plans, and ongoing studies at the University of Pittsburgh.

Kind regards,
Dillion Asher

About me: https://www.linkedin.com/in/james-dillion-asher-51032019. My primary interests lie in sustainable urban development and in energy and resource efficiency. I am seeking out NGOs, public institutions, and private companies in the Netherlands currently working in these areas.

Every once in a while I'll share an update and insights of this platform, putting them in a broader perspective of the development of smart cities. For opening a window to the future I always believe in taking a look over our shoulders. That's why I'd like to start this weekend with Billie Jean!

Did you know Michael Jackson was ahead of his time publishing his smart city video clip of Billie Jean in 1983? The clip shows the King of Pop moving around a city landscape in which squares light up whenever he passes by. The same goes for the smart lights of the street responding to his presence. Not only did this short film break down MTV's racial barrier as the first video by a black artist to be aired in heavy rotation, it also showed an future vision of a smart city which has become reality.

Check out the smart light project of the Hoekenrodeplein for example: <https://amsterdamsmartcity.com/projects/smart-light>

I hope to inspire you in the future and light your way through our smart city. Does your smart city look like the one in Billie Jean?

Visit to the Machine Room - City-zen: Comfort Cooling

Featured image

This week had a few warm days again. The ideal moment to visit the Machine Room of the Comfort Cooling Network in the Houthaven District. The City-zen delegation (the network is supported by the European Commission) enjoyed a guided tour by the CEO and asset manager of Westpoort Warmte and learned all about the weird things in the filters, why some coolers are made of stainless steel and others of titanium, but also about the way Westpoort Warmte is charging the residents for this additional service.

Next steps: all 2000 dwellings in this district will be connected eventually. This means the installation will be expanded and a second Machine Room will be installed on the other side of the area. Today, the first 200 apartments and 2 schools are connected. Besides the Comfort Cooling Network, the area also is connected to a District Heating Network.
