Research Interview on Digitalization and Big Data in City Administrations

Featured image

My name is Joe Calodich and I work as a researcher at Erasmus University Rotterdam in the research group Vital Cities and Citizens. I am currently looking for members of the city administrations in Amsterdam, Rotterdam, Prague, Tallinn, Vienna, Zurich, Brussels, or Munich who are interested in participating in a research interview.

The study which I am asking your participation for focuses on how large European cities have undertaken the digitalisation process of the public administration and how this process has affected the workings and the policies. I would also like to learn about some concrete examples on the use of big data related to this digitalisation process.

I hope to complete the interviews by the end of February 2023. Each interview will last between one hour and fifteen minutes and one hour and a half. The interview will be recorded and the content will be exclusively used for academic purposes (analysis, scientific publications, presentations, reports) and within the boundaries of the study’s goals. The gathered information will be treated by complying with anonymity and confidentiality criteria as defined in the social sciences regarding the use of personal information.

If you, or a colleague, is interested in participating, please send me an email at: 627583jc@eur.nl.

I look forward to hearing from some of you soon!

The State of the Internet 2023

Featured image

On March 9 2023, it is once again time for The State of the Internet, a gathering to discuss the big issues of privacy, platformisation, self-determination and digital rights. This year's lecture will be led by writer, artist, journalist and technologist James Bridle (they/them). Bridle explores how radical technological models can decentralise power. The lecture is in English.

About James Bridle
James Bridle works as a writer, artist, journalist and technologist. Their artworks have been commissioned by galleries and institutions and exhibited worldwide. Bridle writes about literature, culture and networks and has been published in magazines and newspapers including Wired, the Atlantic, the New Statesman, the Guardian and the Financial Times.
With a background in computer science, they consider the question of what intelligence is. In the new book Ways of Being, Bridle considers the fascinating, uncanny and multiple ways of existing on Earth. They wonder what it means to be intelligent? Is it something unique to humans or do we share it with other creatures? And what can we learn from the intelligence of the natural systems that surround us?

About The State of the Internet
On 15 January 2019, Waag kicked off the first edition of The State of the Internet. Since then, we have been commemorating annually the moment when, for Amsterdam, the internet became accessible as a public domain. This year, it has been 29 years since the Digital City opened its doors and the internet became publicly accessible. During the first edition in 2019, professor of media and digital society José van Dijck delivered the lecture, zooming in on the role of platforms in our public space. In 2020, Jaap-Henk Hoepman, expert on privacy by design, addressed our digital identity. In 2021, Sennay Ghebreab spoke about bias in algorithms. In 2022 Nani Jansen Reventlow, award-winning human rights lawyer specialising in strategic litigation at the intersection of human rights, social justice and technology delivered the lecture.
Missed the previous lectures? You can find them here (all in Dutch):

The State of the Internet 2023 is organised by Waag, SIDN, the SIDN fund and the Amsterdam Public Library (OBA)Singel Uitgeverijen and De Groene Amsterdammer. For years, the SIDN Fund has supported internet initiatives that shape a strong internet in which public values are safeguarded. Money should not be a barrier in learning about ways to improve our internet. If the admission fee prevents you from attending, email puck@waag.org, so we can make sure you can attend The State of the Internet.

Responsible digitalisation challenge: How to make digital systems more human-centric?

Featured image

Technological and innovative developments are moving faster than ever before. As a government, you want and need to keep up with these developments. At the same time, the use of digitalisation and data often leads to undesired results, increasing the distance between citizens/entrepreneurs and the government.

The municipality of Haarlemmermeer is shifting her focus from 'the system is central, people have to become more digitally savvy to 'people are central, our systems have to become human-centric’. The underlying question is: how do you really put people at the centre of digitalisation and the design of digital systems?

Do you want to know more or contribute to this challenge? Contact me via sophie@amsterdamsmartcity.com or let me know via the comments below.

Project’s current phase

Jeroen Brink and Christine Groothuis from the municipality of Haarlemmermeer introduced this challenge to the Amsterdam Smart City network on the 7th of November, 2022. During a co-creation session, we discussed that there are two main elements of this complex challenge that we would like to focus on. On the one hand, we’re talking about a radical and fundamental shift. A different way of thinking within governmental institutions. This shift requires a more philosophical and substantive conversation about how we would like our digital public space and systems to look like. But on the other hand, we want to think big but also start small. Therefore, the municipality of Haarlemmermeer would like to embrace a real-life case to bring human-centred digital systems to life.

On the 1st of December, we organised a follow-up session with Amsterdam Smart City partners. During this session, Max Kortlander (Waag) presented the Public Stack. This project puts the public value at the centre to create open, democratic and sustainable digital public spaces. Following this introduction, we did a futures-thinking exercise led by Sacha van Tongeren (Kennisland), to think about how we want the digital public space to look like in the future. And additionally, we used empathy maps to synthesize our collective knowledge about our audience, which brought us closer to a common understanding of who they are.

Waag Open: Black Mirror Stories

Featured image

Programma
19:15 deur open
19:30 - 19:40 welkom & introductie door Waag
19:40 - 19:50 introductie door Roos Groothuizen
19:50 - 20:00 start spel Black Mirror Stories

Participate in the '5 questions to' series about your research

Featured image

🔄 How shareable is urban knowledge? Through scientific research, the Closer Cities urban initiative focuses on 'barriers and boosts' of knowledge sharing: what hinders it, what stimulates it, and how can we use these insights in optimizing knowledge sharing?

Closer Cities seeks to answer these questions. We are motivated by the urge to share what's shareable. It is our mission to make knowledge that is currently “invisible”, tied to its origin and unrecognized by the larger urban community, visible and shareable. In the end, we strongly believe that a better exchange and use of urban knowledge and experience can have a significant positive societal impact.

'5 questions to' series
As part of the platform, we showcase the extensive array of existing urban research. We developed the ‘5 questions to’ series in which we ask researchers and scientists to briefly reflect on their research (project) and the shareability of their insights by answering five questions.

How to participate
Closer Cities is calling all scientists to participate in our '5 questions to' series. The insights you share via the five questions form will be published on the Closer Cities website. Accordingly, you contribute to our aim of optimizing the shareability of knowledge. In turn, we would like to give you the opportunity to share insight from your research. Interested in participating? Fill out the five questions here.

Would you like to discover all five question interviews on our platform? Check them out here.

About Closer Cities
The Closer Cities urban research project (2021-2030) aims to contribute to achieving the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). We focus on the optimization of cocreating and sharing urban knowledge. In order to get a better understanding of this process, we need to know what stimulates it and what hinders it. Or, in short, what are the barriers and boosts?

OK Google: Give me my data. Explore and (maybe) donate your voice records towards more inclusive voice recognition technology!

Featured image

If you are a user of voice assistants, you have probably experienced misunderstandings, especially if you are a woman or have an accent.  One of the reasons behind misunderstandings is bias in voice biometrics. This is not a problem if you’re a white US male, but for the rest of us, voice-based systems may be biased.

If you use Google Assistant, whether you use the Assistant App, use Google Home, or Google Nest, you can help mitigate bias in voice biometrics by donating your voice records.

In the process, you will be able to explore your data before committing to donate it.
To do so:

  1. Download a copy of your Google Assistant records (See detailed instructions)
  2. Upload your data to our Data Donation Platform and explore it
  3. Decide what exactly you want to share and donate your data!

We will use the donated data to develop design guidelines and construct an evaluation dataset that reflects real-life usage conditions of voice biometrics technology. In addition, you can participate in a follow-up interview to delve into your personal experience with voice assistants and further explore your data.

This project is part of my PhD research and your contribution would be greatly appreciated! Feel free to reach out :)

'Better cities' is nu 'Steden en digitalisering'

Featured image

Waarom meedoen

  • Je leert over digitalisering en technologisering en hoe je dat kunt toepassen in de stad van de toekomst. Je leert het direct uit de praktijk en van de mensen die er dagelijks meer werken. Kennis die je in je opleiding niet krijgt;
  • Je ontwikkelt je professionele en persoonlijke skills;
  • Je bent graag met inhoudelijke en vernieuwende onderwerpen;
  • Je vind het fijn om nieuwe interessante mensen te leren kennen;
