#Circular business models

Het bedrijfsleven is een belangrijke speler in onze transitie naar een circulaire samenleving. Maar circulair ondernemen kan ook vragen en onzekerheden oproepen. Wanneer is jouw product of dienst echt circulair? Hoe doorbreek je lineaire doelen, wanneer stap je in de circulaire keten, en hoe kun je groeien als bedrijf of ondernemer in een zogenaamde donuteconomie?

Om deze vragen te beantwoorden organiseert gemeente Almere vanuit het coalitieprogramma een reeks van drie gratis MKB Masterclasses – Van Lineair naar Circulair Ondernemen.

Ook deelnemers buiten Almere zijn welkom, wellicht zijn er in Almere ontwikkelingen of kansen die aansluiten bij de visie van jouw bedrijf waar het coalitieprogramma mee kan ondersteunen of verbindingen kan leggen.

Samenwerken aan een groene en gezonde stad

In Almere werken we aan een groene en gezonde stad; een verantwoordelijke stad, die wordt gebouwd door mensen die geloven dat het anders moet en kan. Als stad bieden we ruimte aan nieuwe en bestaande bedrijven om business cases door te ontwikkelen die voordelen opleveren voor mens en natuur.

We geloven in een proactieve samenwerking tussen overheid en het bedrijfsleven, we verbinden partijen en faciliteren processen. Samen werk we aan tast- en haalbare ambities en uitdagingen en komen we tot slimme samenwerkingen die de stad beter maken. Heb je al een bestaande coalitie? Geweldig! Ook dan helpen we je graag verder.

In earlier episodes of Designing Cities for All, we have seen that design is everywhere and everything around us is designed. We have also seen that there are flaws in these designs, because what we tend to do in this world is design for the middle and forget about the margins. Wouldn’t we create and build stronger structures for everyone, when we design for the people who are actually living with the failures of our designed products, spaces, and systems?

Demodays are part of our innovation process and intended to boost the progress of the various innovation projects, put requests for help on the table, share dilemmas and involve others in your projects or challenges. Invitations are sent  but you can join.

We host them every 8-10 weeks. During Demo days, community members pitch projects and ask for input and in small groups we work on concrete questions that our partners put on the table. We organize workshops with them and other partners to get a step further in the process. All in a very positive, open and cheerful vibe.

Young Urban Engineers (YUE) is a brand new student consultancy firm that focuses on projects within the urban environment. This new consultancy firm is founded by three entrepreneurial MSc MADE Students: Titus Venverloo, Annie Berendsen and Hanna Winters.

They want to give students from the MSc Metropolitan Analysis, Design and Engineering program (MSc MADE) the opportunity to participate and gain experience with real-life projects. By matching them to project from companies that are looking for a fresh perspective on the urban issues at hand.

In recent months, the Province of Noord-Holland, the Ministry of the Interior and Kingdom Relations (BZK) in collaboration with Merel Stolker (Construction specialist, C-Creators) and Anne van Stijn (researcher, TU Delft) worked on a manual for housing corporations about circular renovation. With this manual, they want to embed circular impact in the renovation process - circularity is not the goal, but a means to achieve a sustainable built environment.

Handbook for circular renovation housing corporations
The handbook describes a process for circular renovation for housing corporations, explaining who should be involved in which step, which decisions are made and special points to pay attention to. This is illustrated by means of a number of inspiring examples.

The handbook also provides a clear definition of circular renovation: maintaining, renewing and reusing building (parts) without unnecessarily depleting natural resources, polluting the living environment and harming the ecosystem. This can be done on the basis of the well-known raw material principles - narrowing the loop, slowing the loop and closing the loop - which C-creators have translated into three building principles: minimize, utilize the available and use the reusable. Don't just look at the source of circular material, but also at the end of life.

The manual is intended as a starting document, an invitation for housing corporations and supply chain partners to get started themselves.

I am addressing you all with a bit of a broad request, in the hopes of finding the right participants semi-organically. I am currently in the last months of my Master's in Global Business & Sustainability at the Rotterdam School of Management (RSM) and with that comes a very important thesis project.

For my thesis project, I decided to perform a case study on the Bajeskwartier Amsterdam and investigate Amsterdam's smart city approach, the influence this has had on Circular Economy Business Models, Refurbishment Business Models, etc.

For my investigation, I would like to interview participants that have particular knowledge on the aforementioned, or know of others who could possibly help me enrich my data and findings!

On April 9th three collective entrepreneurs present their Mobility as a Common initiatives and challenges at the Townmaking Common Labworks.

The Towmaking Common Labworks are a network of cooperative initiatives that develop and implement solutions for the common good. This Friday we start a series of meetups for the vertical in Mobility as a Commons, and invite entrepreneurs, governments and professionals to join the Labworks and build together.

This Friday WijZijnDeel and the Amsterdam Bicycle Collective will present their initiatives and journeys.
The ABC builds a local cooperative ecosystem for the development, production, maintenance, and use of community-built circular eBikes. Join the designers, engineers, bicycle shops, and educational partners in making Dutch cycling culture about care for healthy living, sustainable production, and quality making.
WijZijnDeel  organises citizens in cooperatives in order to be able to provide in their collective mobility needs.

Our city urgently requires zero-emissions and lower loads on aging infrastructure, and at the same time the health of our city also needs mobility solutions that are sensitive to local needs, and that are made and maintained by highly-skilled local economies. We believe local communities are best positioned to understand their collective needs and environment, and they form the heart of a healthy, sustainable and  inclusive society. Therefore our mission is to empower these communities with quality infrastructure and ownership.

Fruit skin fabric, mushroom ‘leather’, spider-silk, dye made by bacteria and algae; GROW, the new exhibition from the Fashion for Good Museum in Amsterdam explores the biomaterials and cutting-edge innovations that are shaping the sustainable future of fashion. What exactly are biomaterials? How sustainable are they and what makes them different from traditional fibres like cotton and hemp? And does bio always mean better and sustainable? Navigating the many different kinds of sustainable materials can be challenging. For their year-long exhibition, curated and developed in-house for the first time, the Fashion for Good Museum dives into all things biomaterials.

WHAT ARE BIOMATERIALS?
Biomaterial is a very generic word used to describe materials that are biological, and originate from living organisms. When you think of biomaterials, probably the first things that come to mind are cotton, hemp and linen. Because the word is not specific, it can easily be confusing. The world of biomaterials is way bigger and ever evolving. Think as big as silk, fruitskins (waste), mycelium (mushroom roots) or even algae, spider and caterpillar silk, cellulosics (coming from plants) and bioplastics, all of which are part of the biomaterials world.

LOVE FASHION FROM THE GROUND UP
Fashion has always celebrated the ingenuity of nature, from its organic shapes and patterns, materials and fibres, to the wide array of colours and textures. With the rise of fast fashion, the natural world is plundered for its resources, putting the relationship between fashion and nature under strain.

The GROW expo shows how trailblazing innovations can instead take inspiration from nature and how scientists are using this cycle of creation and recreation to make the sustainable materials of the future.

Showcasing conventional biomaterials such as organic cotton and biodegradable materials such as flax or hemp, the expo also presents more innovative brands and products from pioneers such as Pangaia (available for the first time in a retail store in the Netherlands), FREITAG F-ABRIC, the Nude Label, Phool, Bananatex and Bioglitz - with a special glitter station, featuring in the museum’s GOOD SHOP.

GROW 1.0 opens its door to the public from April 6th.

Daarnaast werk je met onze partners aan het aanjagen van innovaties binnen het transitiepad Mobiliteit & Logistiek en legt verbindingen met de community. Ook breid je het netwerk uit met relevante organisaties en innovatieve projecten. De communicatie- en programmamedewerker werkt nauw samen met het gehele smart city team en legt verantwoording af aan de communicatiemanager. Daarnaast heb je een aantal programma ondersteunende taken.

De transitie naar een circulaire economie, iedereen heeft het erover. Ondernemers spelen een cruciale rol in deze transitie én het gaat iedereen aan, want het is urgent, het biedt kansen en alleen gezamenlijk kunnen we slagen. Maar wat gebeurt er eigenlijk – heel praktisch gezien – in de provincie Noord-Holland op weg naar een circulaire economie?

Op 15 april nemen we u daarin tijdens het online Circulair Event graag mee. We gaan in gesprek over de randvoorwaarden, zoals financiering, die nodig zijn om de transitie te versnellen. Aan de hand van gesprekken met Noord-Hollandse ondernemers laten we zien wat het betekent om circulair te ondernemen. Ook gaan we in op wat de provincie voor ondernemers kan betekenen.

De HvA start project BASSTA naar gedragsinterventies om huishoudens ervan bewust maken of ze op de juiste manier hun afval weggooien en hoe dit te verbeteren.

Chipszakken bij plastic afval, theezakjes bij gft? Afval scheiden wordt niet altijd op goede wijze gedaan, en überhaupt nog te weinig. Dat is zonde, want goed gescheiden afval biedt kansen voor recycling en andere circulaire toepassingen. De Hogeschool van Amsterdam (HvA) start met het project BASSTA een onderzoek naar het verbeteren van het scheidingsgedrag van huishoudens, met een focus op de stedelijke omgeving.

We willen in 2050 volledig circulair zijn. Voor de transitie naar een circulaire economie moet het afval dat ontstaat goed herbruikbaar zijn als grondstof voor nieuwe producten. Een goede scheiding van het afval is een belangrijke voorwaarde hiervoor. Met ongeveer 8 miljard kilo huishoudelijk afval per jaar in Nederland zorgt elk percentage betere scheiding voor enorme resultaten. BASSTA behandelt daarom zowel het verhogen van de scheidingsgraad (de hoeveelheid afval die gescheiden wordt), als het verlagen van de vervuiling van de gescheiden afvalfracties (papier, gft, plastic). Om dat te realiseren, is gedragsverandering nodig.

Automatisch gedrag onder de loep

Mensen gooien hun afval vaak op dezelfde, veelal onbewuste manier weg. BASSTA richt zich daarom op dit automatisch gedrag, vertelt projectleider Maarten Mulder. ‘Door het automatisch gedrag onder de loep te nemen, vormt dit project een belangrijke aanvulling op het bestaande onderzoek naar gedragsinterventies. De nieuwe interventies die het onderzoek opleveren, moeten helpen om het gewoontegedrag te onderbreken en huishoudens ervan bewust maken of ze op de juiste manier hun afval weggooien. Ook voor de mensen die nu nog niet (graag) afval scheiden. Met een duidelijke uitleg hoe en waarom deze interventies werken, is het streven dat zoveel mogelijk Nederlandse stedelijke gemeenten hiermee aan de slag gaan. Zo kunnen ze betere bronscheiding realiseren.’

Dagboek van huishoudens

De interventies worden ontworpen en getest in nauwe samenwerking tussen industrieel ontwerpers en gedragspsychologen van de HvA. Mulder: ‘Middels dagboekstudies bij bewoners thuis analyseren we op welke momenten het automatisch gedrag veranderd kan worden. In de zomer verwachten we de resultaten. Hiermee kunnen we de ‘customer journey’ schetsen: het in detail weergeven van het proces van afval weggooien. Vervolgens ontwerpen we de gedragsinterventies die we gaan testen in verschillende steden. Dat zal begin 2022 gaan gebeuren.’

Samenwerking binnen de HvA

BASSTA is een samenwerkingsproject van Centres of Expertise Urban Technology en Urban Governance and Social Innovation. De verbonden lectoraten Circulair ontwerpen en ondernemen & Psychologie voor een Duurzame Stad onderzoeken en ontwikkelen innovaties om tot een circulaire economie en maatschappij te komen.

Diverse praktijkpartners zijn bij het onderzoek van belang en betrokken. Gemeenten zoals Amsterdam, Rotterdam en Utrecht zijn aangesloten om met bewoners de interventies te testen. Ook helpen stuurgroepen als Rijkswaterstaat en branchevereniging NVRD het onderzoek verder. Daarnaast brengen ROVA, De Afvalspiegel en Giraf Results expertise in rondom afvalinzameling, en verspreiden Milieu Centraal en VVM de resultaten.
