Would you like to help make Amsterdam a safer and more livable place?  The Code The Streets project is looking for car drivers in Amsterdam who would like to test the TomTom AmiGo navigation app.  The goal of the pilot is to support you in choosing an alternative, more 'social' route by providing you data about school zones, traffic jams, environmental zones, and vulnerable infrastructure. I am looking for inspiration on nature-based solutions in Amsterdam. I have a full day in Amsterdam the 6 th of October 2021, and I would love to visit locations having implemented nature-based solutions in impressive ways. I am curious about how Amsterdam has worked with urban biodiversity and how Amsterdam has implemented large-scale nature-based solutions, e.g. green corridors or other kinds of 'wild nature' in the city, for the benefit of people and other species :)

I hope you can help me with advices on where to go and whom to talk with?

My research project: Biocities of the future
The ambition is to develop initiatives that can help urban stakeholders integrate nature-based ideas and design strategies in urban development. The project includes prototyping a dialogue tool and testing if it could supplement the international certification tool DGNB Urban Districts.

I study how nature-based ideas integrate in urban development of today, and I identify some of the main drivers, paradoxes, consequences, and challenges, related to these integrations. The project focus is urban development inspired by nature’s ability to regenerate, through e.g., biomimicry and regenerative and biophilic design thinking.

My research is based on a cooperation between three Danish organisations:
City & Port - develop large scale urban areas in Copenhagen, DK
The Royal Danish Academy - Architecture, Design, Conservation
Bloxhub Science Forum - a nordic innovation hub for sustainable urbanization

For those of you who know, Marineterrein Amsterdam has been a test area to explore responsible counting of crowds (big and small) in a living lab environment. Summer temperatures are bringing large numbers people to the Marineterrein to cool off - but earlier this winter / spring, the crowd monitor revealed some fun facts about how people made use the inner-city living lab during the Covid19 lockdown.

This summer we’re collecting feedback from the Marineterrein community and the general public. As part of the ESPON DIGISER project (Digital Innovation in Governance and Public Service Provision) and beyond, we are collecting data on the practices and current situation of digital innovation in European cities, towns and regions.

The DIGISER project is an EU initiative run by the ESPON Programme and supported by the European Committee of the Regions, living-in.eu, EUROCITIES, ICLEI, 100 Intelligent Cities Challenge, Smart Cities Marketplace and Open and Agile Smart Cities.

The goal is to lay the foundations for future EU programs and initiatives that support municipalities in their digital transition. To do this, we need to know what is being done at local level. The survey is also the cornerstone of the annual index, which will help you understand the current state of your digital journey and help cities with to benchmark themselves against similar cities across Europe. By participating in the survey, you will get a better overview of your city's approach to digital innovation. The results of the survey can be used by local governments to apply for funding from future EU or national programmes.

In steden zonder kliko’s of afvalinzamelingspunten in de buurt is afval scheiden niet voor iedereen makkelijk te noemen. En in een klein appartement op vier hoog heb je nauwelijks plek voor alle benodigde prullenbakken. De Hogeschool van Amsterdam (HvA) doet met BASSTA onderzoek naar betere afvalscheiding door huishoudens in de stad.

Met deze studie kunnen we achterhalen hoe stedelijke huishoudens hun afval scheiden, waar het nog niet zo goed gaat en hoe we dit kunnen verbeteren met gedragsinterventies. Met een duidelijke uitleg hoe en waarom deze interventies werken, is het streven dat zoveel mogelijk Nederlandse stedelijke gemeenten hiermee aan de slag gaan. Met ongeveer 8 miljard kilo huishoudelijk afval per jaar in Nederland zorgt elk percentage betere scheiding voor enorme resultaten.

Dagboekstudie: Hoe goed scheid jij thuis je afval?

In een doe-boek worden de resultaten bijgehouden van leuke, korte opdrachten die iets zeggen over afvalgedrag. Hierin wordt ook aangegeven wat (on)prettig of (on)handig is rondom de afvalinzameling bij jou thuis. Dat is nuttige informatie voor de gemeente en afvalinzamelaar, die kunnen daarmee hun werk verbeteren.

Een vereiste is wel dat je op een plek woont waar je geen eigen kliko’s hebt, maar waar je wel afval kan scheiden door gebruik te maken van gezamenlijke voorzieningen zoals ondergrondse containers.

Geef je op en krijg eind mei het doe-boek thuisbezorgd. De onderzoekers zullen dan ook nog iets meer uitleg geven. Je mag zelf kiezen op welk moment je de opdrachten doet. Begin dit jaar is het ‘Manifest Burgerberaad Klimaat en Milieu’ gelanceerd. Een coalitie van burgers en organisaties roept de politiek op een ambitieus burgerberaad in te stellen, waarin burgers maatregelen bedenken om de klimaatcrisis te bestrijden en biodiversiteitsverlies tegen te gaan. Ik ondersteun dit manifest van harte omdat ik erin geloof dat een grotere betrokkenheid van burgers bij deze grote uitdaging leidt tot betere en eerlijkere oplossingen. Jij ook? Teken het manifest!

De opwarming van de aarde raakt alles en iedereen. Om de aarde leefbaar te houden zijn snel grote veranderingen nodig. De Nederlandse overheid (gemeenten, provincies en Rijk) lijken nog onvoldoende in staat om tot een toereikende, integrale aanpak van de klimaatcrisis te komen. Een belangrijke barrière is dat moeilijke keuzes (bijvoorbeeld rondom de plaatsing van windmolens of het inperken van de intensieve landbouw) uit de weg worden gegaan. Ook worden burgers onvoldoende en vaak veel te laat betrokken bij de voorgestelde oplossingen, wat leidt tot vertraging en weerstand.

Waarom een burgerberaad?
Een burgerberaad is een onafhankelijk georganiseerde werkwijze waarbij een gelote dwarsdoorsnede van de Nederlandse bevolking zich laat informeren door experts en belanghebbenden. Vrij van lobby en verkiezingsdruk ontwikkelen zij maatregelen die eerlijk en toereikend zijn, en bovendien gesteund worden door de samenleving. Onder andere dit rapport van de OECD laat zien dat deze democratische methode in het buitenland goed werkt om hete hangijzers aan te pakken. Een belangrijke voorwaarde is dat het proces transparant wordt ingericht.

I am currently in the last months of my Master's in Global Business & Sustainability at the Rotterdam School of Management (RSM) and with that comes a very important thesis project.

For my thesis project, I decided to perform a case study on the Bajeskwartier Amsterdam and investigate Amsterdam's smart city approach, the influence this has had on Circular Economy Business Models, Refurbishment Business Models, etc.

For my investigation, I would like to interview participants that have particular knowledge on the aforementioned, or know of others who could possibly help me enrich my data and findings!

Today I start my dissertation project for Oxand. Together we will be working towards defining clearer goals for Gemeente Amsterdam's smart city objectives! We will approach this challenge by taking the #SmartCity principles and observing them through the lens of #SystemEngineering.

I am looking for members who are interesting in helping me identify stakeholders, current challenges facing the municipality, developing projects, objectives that must be fulfilled and much more!

Recently I have graduated in urban planning, and I am looking for job or research opportunities in the Netherlands. Earlier I was a guest researcher at Technical University of Eindhoven (TUe) and University of California- Santa Barbara. The focus point of my interests is navigating information and communication technologies (ICTs) and their spatial effects in different urban subsystems (especially transportation and mobility, autonomous vehicles) toward Smart city, as a vision.
I would appreciate your advice if you know any opportunities in the Netherlands.

I am a PhD in Urban planning. The vision of my work is facilitating the smart city. I am interested in understanding the mechanism of spatial effects that happen during time by applying ICTs in urban subsystems. By ICTs, I mean services and devices which function based on information and communication technologies. Spatial effects also refer to the changes in the activity-travel behavior, parking lots, land uses, urban sprawl, logistics sprawl, housing location choices, population density, building density, core-peripheral distribution pattern, traffic flows and land per capita.
I think now we are at the beginning of the fourth industrial revolution. Does it make
effects similar to effects which we observed after the third industrial revolution (urban sprawl, land use change, networks of highways and mass of pollution by private cars)? I believe that the synergy between robotics, nanotechnologies and the new generation of ICTs (e.g., Autonomous vehicles, navigation apps, digital
twins, internet of things and augmented reality) has the potential to make primary and secondary effects which change the current patterns and conceptions of urban planners and urban policymakers about cities.

Veel MKB-ers willen zich uit de crisis innoveren. Internationaal actief worden is kansrijk en vraagt voorbereiding en energie. Amsterdam Trade and Innovate en PIM Noord-Holland (Programma Investeringsgereed Innovatief MKB Noord-Holland) willen ondernemers helpen dit goed en succesvol aan te pakken. Op dinsdag 2 maart tussen 09.30 en 12.30 uur organiseert Amsterdam Smart City een sessie met de provincie Noord-Holland rondom het op orde brengen van het ‘datafundament’.

De provincie wil meer datagedreven gaan werken. Ze is aan het onderzoeken hoe zij hun databeleid, de data-infrastructuur en organisatorische processen moet vormgeven. De provincie wil hiermee basisinformatie leveren aan haar opgaven, zorgen voor een goede uitwisseling van data met derden en ook adaptief zijn. En daar zoeken ze de inhoud en ervaringen van andere partijen, zowel overheden als bedrijven, bij!

Heb jij ervaringen met datagedreven werken en het op orde brengen van je systemen om dit te realiseren? Heb je hier veel successen gezien of is dit juist gefaald? Werk je in het stedelijk domein of juist in een totaal andere sector? Denk en werk dan met ons mee!

Hello ASC community!  We are a local start-up working to increase Conscious Dining through a new way of searching for and rating restaurants.  It is also our goal to go beyond the digital by working on local impact projects.

Recently, we surveyed the 150+ restaurants in our database on the effects of Corona on their sustainability practices, specifically in regards to the increase in packaging waste brought on by takeaway/ delivery services, and published an article on our findings here:  https://www.table-sage.com/content/articles/amsterdam/restaurants-need-support-to-continue-sustainability-efforts-during-covid-19

We would love to collaborate with larger players, either 1) in further quantifying these effects, and/ or 2) in helping restaurants move to ecopackaging on a wider scale.  Are you or someone you know interested in partnering to make moves in this space?  We have a team of 6-8 able to support; more about us can be seen on www.table-sage.com.

As societal values change and the deployment of sensing technology becomes more ubiquitous, what are our digital rights in a 21st-century city?  This dilemma is forcing municipalities to make difficult decisions about practice versus the policy of collecting data from public space. In collaboration with the City of Amsterdam, The City Innovation Exchange Lab (CITIXL) has created the Responsible Sensing Toolkit -  a six-step process to help navigate this new landscape in a fast and effective way. The toolkit was co-designed by experienced city innovators to empower municipalities, organisations, and communities to implement open and inclusive sensing solutions for our 21st-century cities.

Mobility as a Service (MaaS) is about planning, booking and paying for all possible transport via apps. It enables carefree, integrated travel according to your own preferences. To facilitate this, mobility providers have to collaborate. They have to share data and work in a standardized system.

There’s not yet a fully operable MaaS system in the Amsterdam Metropolitan Area. There are a lot of different mobility parties in our region that collect data and are hesitant to share them. And there are a lot of (local) governments that have a say in the development of MaaS systems.

In some European cities and MaaS systems are running. What are their success factors? How did they convince private parties to share data to set up a MaaS system? How did governments reached an agreement on this?
