Amsterdam Smart City Tour x WeMakeThe.City

Featured image

Do you want to learn about the Amsterdam innovation approach and the innovation ecosystem in which we operate? How do we shape the city of the future together with proactive citizens, innovative companies, knowledge institutions and public authorities? Marineterrein Amsterdam will talk about the innovation district and we will visit four innovative organizations based on the Marineterrein.
The partners and project you will get to know during the Tour:
• Amsterdam Smart City consists of a public private partnership and an international community of more than 6.500 members. By sharing knowledge and by collaborating we come up with innovative solutions for metropolitan issues of a social, economic and ecological nature. This way we ensure that the Amsterdam Metropolitan Area remains liveable, now and in the years to come.
• Living Lab is a method to urban experimentation which is now being applied on the Marineterrein. Find out how the Marineterrein is being transformed in a living lab and what this means for organizations looking to test and scale their solutions.
• CODAM is a new and unique coding college in the heart of Amsterdam where students learn to code in a radical peer-to-peer environment. During this visit, participants will learn what makes CODAM such a novel and effective way to prepare young people for careers of the future.
• NEMO will open a second location called De Studio with a focus on adult visitors next to the family museum. The program will be focussed on actual themes like food, health, education, sustainability and sports. The first exhibition, Future Food, will start on Juli 9th and will give a preview on the change needed in the world of food the coming years in order to keep the planet sustainable.
• Marineterrein Amsterdam is an innovative area with an international community of pioneers, scientists and entrepreneurs working together on innovative ideas and projects that promote a sustainable society. For example Project SmartRoof 2.0; an innovative, lightweight, blue-green roof, that has been installed on Building 002. Water management (blue) and plants (green) are carefully monitored using sensors. This research shows that blue-green roofs help in the insulation of buildings, the collection of rainwater, the greening of cities and the reduction of the urban heat island effect.

Do you want to learn about the Amsterdam innovation approach and the innovation ecosystem in which we operate? How do we shape the city of the future together with proactive citizens, innovative companies, knowledge institutions and public authorities? After visits to four innovative organizations, we finish the tour with a festival launch of the new Amsterdam Smart City Lab and a ‘Borrel’.

• AMS Institute works on advanced metropolitan solutions. AMS has developed a Living Lab method to urban experimentation which is now being applied on the Marineterrein. Find out how the Marineterrein is being transformed in a living lab and what this means for organizations looking to test and scale their solutions.
• NEMO Kennislink is a program by NEMO focused on developing formats for inclusive and accessible participation. With the rise of the Smart City comes seemingly endless array of possibilities, but is also accompanied by uncertainties, dilemmas and concerns. All parties should participate in this debate, but there are many questions how to engage (all of) them effectively. Through its Kennislink program, NEMO connects stakeholders such as living labs, municipalities, businesses and scientists to citizens in meaningful dialogues and co-creation.
• Omons implements democratic principles into a digital platform to involve local residents in decision making about transitioning to sustainable energy for their houses and neighborhood. Making a successful transition to sustainable energy not only depends on the efforts of countries, cities and companies but most importantly on the support of local residents. Omons will provide a workshop on how the digital platform involves local residents in decision-making about sustainable living.
• ‘Amsterdammers, Make Your City!’ is the legacy of Amsterdam winning the European “Innovation Capital” award in 2016. During this visit, you will hear from Kennisland, one of the initiators of the program about this social innovation accelerator for a healthy and talented city.

Circulaire vooruitzichten

Featured image

€300,000 available to build Platform for Cycling Innovations & Showcase Amsterdam as a Knowledge Cycling City

Are you . . .
* Passionate about the role that the bicycle plays in keeping Amsterdam and the metropolitan area accessible and livable?
* Playing an active role in sharing this knowledge internationally?
* Experienced with building digital platforms and innovation ecosystems?

If so, the City of Amsterdam and the Vervoerregio (Amsterdam Transport Region) could select your organization as the collaboration partner to support the following goals:
* Develop and share knowledge about cycling
* Stimulate innovation and experimentation in the field of cycling
* Profile Amsterdam nationally and internationally as a knowledge cycling city
* Stimulate bicycle use to achieve these goals

Why?
In its Multi-year Bicycle Plan (MJP), the municipality of Amsterdam profiles itself "nationally and internationally as The Knowledge City in the Field of Cycling.” According to the MJP, the City would like to create more room for experimentation in order to solve Amsterdam’s unique cycling challenges, and testing of innovative bicycle concepts plays an integral role in finding those solutions.

Amsterdam has been building on knowledge development in the field of cycling in a compact city, and the municipality is now taking a deliberate path toward a stronger profile of sharing knowledge and supporting innovation and experimentation. To achieve these goals, the municipality of Amsterdam and Vervoerregio seek support for the following activities:

1. Digital Knowledge & Innovation Platform
Knowledge sharing leads to concrete ideas, projects or initiatives. The winning proposal will need to detail plans for a digital platform which will be in both Dutch and English, through which knowledge and innovations concerning cycling in the Amsterdam region will be bundled and made accessible. It will provide a shared bicycle platform for companies, citizens, academic, municipality, and transport region and social organizations in the field of cycling for the Amsterdam region. The platform will also offer the opportunity to showcase Amsterdam as a cycling city internationally. The platform must be fully transferable, so that it can be managed and further developed by the municipality or third parties at the end of the term of the agreement.

2. Expanded Network in the Field of Cycling
The winning proposal will be charged with setting up, mobilizing, and stimulating a powerful network organization. Through this network, the makers, inventors, implementers and policymakers will share bicycle knowledge and will be empowered and supported to develop innovative ideas in close collaboration with the commissioning parties.

3. Receive Delegations
The Bicycle platform for knowledge sharing, innovation and experiment has a leading role in receiving international delegations, giving and organizing presentations, and arranging excursions for the many delegations that are expected in Amsterdam and throughout the region.

Interested?
Deadline for proposals is May 14 at 14:00 via TenderNed. All relevant documents and information can be found in Dutch via: https://www.tenderned.nl/tenderned-tap/aankondigingen/162544

Good Luck!
The wining proposal will play an important role in strengthening Amsterdam visibility as a cycling city nationally and internationally!

Featured image

During this high-paced interactive session, you have a chance to ask all your questions about Amsterdam Smart City and get advice on your Smart City Project or Program in a small group setting. You will also have the opportunity to meet with an Amsterdam Smart City team member.

Since 2009, Amsterdam Smart City has been exploring, connecting and accelerating technological and social innovation projects for a future-proof metropolitan region. Through a public-private partnership and an international community, we create impact on four societal transitions: Energy, Mobility, Digital City and Circular City.

Where do the Amsterdam Smart City Programs take place?
Most programs take place, or at least start at, the Smart City Lab on the Marineterrein Innovation District. This is a "small space for big ideas" where we showcase examples of smart city solutions from Amsterdam. The Smart City Experience Lab is also a workplace where Amsterdam Smart City partners meet and collaborate. Groups visiting the Experience Lab can also visit the Marineterrein Amsterdam Living Lab on their own or as a part of an organized program.

Partners Amsterdam Smart City present new activities – recap of our ‘Demo day’

Featured image

At the end of February, two Demo Days took place for the partners of Amsterdam Smart City. The demo day is part of a series and is intended for Amsterdam Smart City partners to present the progress of various innovation projects, ask for input, share dilemmas and involve other partners in projects. Read on for an update of the Amsterdam Smart City program! The Demo Days started with Smart City Academy masterclasses, by our partner the Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences.

Masterclass Collaborative Business Modeling

Jeroen Kraaijenbrink gave a masterclass about the collaborative business modeling method. This is a tool to reach a joint business model with various stakeholders and is the result of a European program (SURF Pop Up). Partners applied the methodology and made a collaborative business model canvas. They made a canvas for the De Bretten area, a green zone in the west of Amsterdam which is under pressure because of an increase of houses and people, and for realising an upcycle center, a center that replaces a traditional dumping ground, in the north of Amsterdam.

Masterclass Citizen’ Engagement

Marie Morel (researcher Metropolitan Issues) gave insights in the field of community management. What questions should you answer to successfully organize participation? What does it mean to make residents part of the project and your business model? And what do the roles of participants look like?

Photo: Marie Morel about community management

Masterclass Upscaling

Willem van Winden (Professor of Urban Economics) talks about the issues related to upscaling. Why do projects fail to scale up? What do they encounter? Are there any tips and tricks? There are some reasons for projects to stay in a pilot phase: clear ownership is often lacking and for project implementation and upscaling, other people are needed. Upscaling should be an important topic, already in the early stage of a project.

Projects

The adaptive city

PostNL and Arcadis have jointly started a project to work towards a more adaptive city. A city in which accessibility, quality of life and sustainability are improved by using traffic data. Following feedback from the previous demo day, they have shifted the focus from safety around elementary schools to other transport movements. Arcadis mapped various busy areas in Amsterdam and wants to collect more data to expand the model. Matthijs explains: ‘PostNL has a new perspective on logistics in the city. We want to reduce congestion, noise and CO₂ emissions. In 2025 we want an emission-free city center. To achieve this, we need more companies that contribute.’

Sustainable logistics with a hub
Large organizations such as the municipality, educational institutions and corporates cause many logistical movements in cities because they have to be provided with all kinds of goods and services. Think of the purchase of office supplies, catering, maintenance, construction works and the waste collection. Buyers can play an important role in organizing logistics more efficiently, smarter and cleaner. For example, the HvA and UvA encourage suppliers to supply goods via a hub. Via electric transport, parcels are delivered on the campuses and delivery frequencies have been lowered. Susanne Balm of the HvA calls on members of Amsterdam Smart City to use this purchasing power.

Criteria for local energy initiatives
Nicholas Been, trainee at Amsterdam Smart City is doing a research on how bottom-up energy initiatives were established and how they organize themselves. He also wants to know what these initiatives need to better cooperate with the municipality. With regard to the second issue, he is working on a list of criteria that local initiatives must meet for efficient and effective cooperation. During the demo day, suggestions for criteria were given. For example, having specific expertise and skills and having a good understanding of the frameworks with which the municipality works. The results of Nicholas’ research are posted on amsterdamsmartcity.com.

Digital Perimeter at Amsterdam ArenA

Daan Groenink pitched the digital perimeter, a collaboration between Johan Cruijff ArenA, the police and the City of Amsterdam. The project revolves around the responsible digital use of cameras and sensors during major events, to increase safety. During the European Championship of 2020, UEFA expects physical fences to guarantee safety, but is this the best way? And if we use digital tools, do we always have to tell visitors that they are being filmed? Other partners remarked that a physical fence is a good solution, we always have to tell people that they are being filmed and followed in a certain area, but maybe we don't have disclose the exact location of the camera. Many people asked for a discussion of this topic and the ethical dilemmas in more detail. In March, we discussed this matter with Amsterdammers in Pakhuis de Zwijger.

CATALYST

NEMO explains the CATALYST project, which they are carrying out together with, among others, the Athena Institute of VU University Amsterdam and TU Delft. Residents are asked about their ideas about the increasing digitization and technology. CATALYST has had conversations in the streets, markets and in community centers. The final phase of the project is near. CATALYST will interview various public and private parties. The results will be shared during an event in the summer.
