Inmiddels is AI een realiteit in ons dagelijks bestaan én in het bedrijfsleven. De recente populariteit van gebruiksvriendelijke tools zoals ChatGPT, Midjourney en Teachable Machine onderstrepen dat nog eens.
AI-toepassingen op het gebied van efficiëntie, besparing en innovatie kunnen mkb’ers veel profijt opleveren. Bijvoorbeeld op het gebied van maatwerk, vroegtijdige en nieuwe inzichten, planning, automatisering, procesoptimalisatie en storingsreductie. Nu AI gemeengoed wordt, is het essentieel om de kansen en uitdagingen te begrijpen.

Bij veel ondernemers roept deze technologie vragen op.Zoals: Voor welke uitdagingen in mijn bedrijf kunnen data en AI mogelijk een oplossing bieden? Waar moet ik rekening mee houden? Het delen van data is een belangrijke motor voor vooruitgang in de samenleving. Ook als die informatie gevoelig is voor privacy en concurrentie. AMdEX, een initiatief van Amsterdam Economic Board en partners, ontwikkelt een manier om data veilig en verantwoord te kunnen delen, met behoud van controle voor data-eigenaars.

Sander Klous (KPMG) is een van de partners die het team achter AMdEX ondersteunen. Dit team werkt aan de ontwikkeling van een 'digitale notaris', die contracten levert aan organisaties die data willen delen. Ook dwingt AMdEX de voorwaarden hierin juridisch af. De contracten ondersteunen eenvoudige datatransacties tussen twee organisaties. Maar ook complexe AI-algoritmen, die toegang moeten hebben tot data die op meerdere plekken is opgeslagen.

Wetten en regels

“Momenteel zijn er geen goede mechanismen om de naleving van de vele regels en voorschriften rond data en AI af te dwingen of zelfs maar te controleren”, zegt Sander Klous. “In andere regelgevingsdomeinen stellen bedrijven als KPMG, als onafhankelijke derde partij, organisaties in staat om hun compliance aan te tonen via een auditproces. Helaas is dit proces ingewikkeld wanneer het gaat om data en AI."

Lopen we straks allemaal met een Augmented Reality-bril door de stad? Waarmee je in een oogopslag de route ziet die je moet lopen, of het social media profiel van jouw tegenligger op straat kunt zien? Hoe is het dan gesteld met onze privacy in de openbare ruimte? En als de fysieke en virtuele wereld zo met elkaar verbonden zijn, is het dan nog wel duidelijk of iets ‘echt’ is?

Praat mee over de kansen en uitdagingen van Extended Reality voor de publieke ruimte. Extended Reality is een verzamelterm voor Augmented Reality (AR), Virtual Reality (VR) en Mixed Reality (MR) waarmee virtuele 3D werelden kunnen worden gecreëerd.

De toepassingen van Extended Reality zijn volop in ontwikkeling. Het lijkt een kwestie van tijd voordat deze een rol gaan spelen in ons dagelijks leven. Zo is het denkbaar dat Augmented Reality-brillen ons gaan ondersteunen in het onderwijs en op de werkvloer. Daarnaast is het denkbaar dat bedrijven virtuele lagen en toepassingen op de publieke ruimte projecteren waardoor deze voor iedereen verandert.

Daarom gaan we in gesprek met experts, onderzoekers en Amsterdammers over de mogelijke en wenselijke rol van Extended Reality. Gezamenlijk zoeken we een antwoord op de volgende vraag: hoe blijft de publieke ruimte een plek van en voor iedereen?

Op dinsdag 21 maart 2023 lanceren we op feestelijke wijze het Centre of Expertise City Net Zero.

De Metropoolregio Amsterdam wil in 2050 klimaatneutraal, circulair en klimaatbestendig zijn, een belangrijke en ingewikkelde opgave. City Net Zero wil hieraan bijdragen door de samenwerking tussen stad en kennisinstelling te versterken. We brengen onderwijs en onderzoek samen met overheid, bedrijfsleven en maatschappelijke partners. Zo draagt City Net Zero in de MRA bij aan zero emissions, zero waste en zero impact of climate extremes.

We nemen u graag mee in ons verhaal tijdens een feestelijke kick-off op dinsdag 21 maart 2023 in het Jakoba Mulderhuis op de Amstelcampus. Daarbij verkennen we de rol die een kennisinstelling als de HvA samen met haar partners kan spelen in de stedelijke transities. We gebruiken de middag om elkaar te verbinden, inspireren en activeren, in een programma met werk- en kennissessies en een plenaire sessie met keynote.

My name is Joe Calodich and I work as a researcher at Erasmus University Rotterdam in the research group Vital Cities and Citizens. I am currently looking for members of the city administrations in Amsterdam, Rotterdam, Prague, Tallinn, Vienna, Zurich, Brussels, or Munich who are interested in participating in a research interview.

The study which I am asking your participation for focuses on how large European cities have undertaken the digitalisation process of the public administration and how this process has affected the workings and the policies. I would also like to learn about some concrete examples on the use of big data related to this digitalisation process.

I hope to complete the interviews by the end of February 2023. Each interview will last between one hour and fifteen minutes and one hour and a half. The interview will be recorded and the content will be exclusively used for academic purposes (analysis, scientific publications, presentations, reports) and within the boundaries of the study’s goals. The gathered information will be treated by complying with anonymity and confidentiality criteria as defined in the social sciences regarding the use of personal information.

On March 9 2023, it is once again time for The State of the Internet, a gathering to discuss the big issues of privacy, platformisation, self-determination and digital rights. This year's lecture will be led by writer, artist, journalist and technologist James Bridle (they/them). Bridle explores how radical technological models can decentralise power. The lecture is in English.

About James Bridle
James Bridle works as a writer, artist, journalist and technologist. Their artworks have been commissioned by galleries and institutions and exhibited worldwide. Bridle writes about literature, culture and networks and has been published in magazines and newspapers including Wired, the Atlantic, the New Statesman, the Guardian and the Financial Times.
With a background in computer science, they consider the question of what intelligence is. In the new book Ways of Being, Bridle considers the fascinating, uncanny and multiple ways of existing on Earth. They wonder what it means to be intelligent? Is it something unique to humans or do we share it with other creatures? And what can we learn from the intelligence of the natural systems that surround us?

About The State of the Internet
On 15 January 2019, Waag kicked off the first edition of The State of the Internet. Since then, we have been commemorating annually the moment when, for Amsterdam, the internet became accessible as a public domain. This year, it has been 29 years since the Digital City opened its doors and the internet became publicly accessible. During the first edition in 2019, professor of media and digital society José van Dijck delivered the lecture, zooming in on the role of platforms in our public space. In 2020, Jaap-Henk Hoepman, expert on privacy by design, addressed our digital identity. In 2021, Sennay Ghebreab spoke about bias in algorithms. In 2022 Nani Jansen Reventlow, award-winning human rights lawyer specialising in strategic litigation at the intersection of human rights, social justice and technology delivered the lecture.

ChatGPT in het onderwijs: een bedreiging of een kans?

Een sensatie op het gebied van Artificial Intelligence, zo wordt ChatGPT door velen genoemd. Deze superslimme chatbot spuugt goedlopende lappen tekst uit en begrijpt opdrachten in gewone taal.

De technologie achter ChatGPT, ontwikkeld door het bedrijf OpenAI, is een taalmodel dat getraind werd op een enorme hoeveelheid data. Inmiddels loopt het storm en ligt de website er geregeld uit door de enorme belangstelling.

Maar wat betekent deze ontwikkeling voor ons onderwijs? ChatGPT zingt al rond in de docentenkamers van de Hogeschool van Amsterdam (HvA). Pascal Wiggers - Associate Lector Responsible AI aan de HvA - tempert de AI-toepassing als sensatie: "ChatGPT kan zeer geloofwaardige, maar niet altijd juiste antwoorden geven op willekeurige vragen. Toch lijkt de toepassing over enige zelfkennis te beschikken."

Betekent dat dat kennisvragen, samenvattingen en essays verleden tijd zijn of zal het zo’n vaart niet lopen? Of biedt ChatGPT juist hele nieuwe mogelijkheden? Wat denken AI-specialisten, onderzoekers en onderwijskundigen hiervan?

De gemeente Amsterdam heeft samen met Helsinki een algoritmeregister ontwikkeld waarin iedereen die dat wil, moet kunnen opzoeken welke algoritmes de gemeente gebruikt, vragen kan stellen en mee kan denken.
In navolging van Amsterdam komt er ook een landelijk algoritmeregister. Maar wat is dit register nou precies en wat kun je er wel en niet vinden? En hoe zit het met algoritmen die er nog niet in staan?
De gemeente Amsterdam verzamelt graag jullie eisen en wensen over transparantie in algoritmen in gebruik door de gemeente Amsterdam. Jullie suggesties worden meegenomen in de inrichting van het landelijk register en doorgegeven als input voor de AI-Act, een Europese wet in wording. Hapjes en drankjes zijn aanwezig.

Zeno AI was awarded a Dutch Applied AI Award on Wednesday evening, 5 October. WSK Medical's technology helps ENT doctors detect throat cancer in patients at an early stage. This is done during an endoscopy, with Artificial Intelligence providing instant analysis. A great example of humans and technology working together.

The Dutch Applied AI Award is a jury prize and was presented for the third time during the annual Computable Awards. The award, which rewards AI innovations, is an initiative of Computable (the platform for ICT professionals), De Dataloog (the Dutch podcast on data and AI) and the Centre of Expertise Applied Artificial Intelligence of Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences. DEARhealth (2020) and BAM Infra Asset Management (2021) preceded Zeno AI as winners.

IMAGE RECOGNITION ON THROAT CANCER VALUABLE

According to jury president Nanda Piersma, doctors are very happy with the application of WSK Medical. The application of image recognition to throat cancer works and is valuable. ‘The technique has reached a new group of users. ENT doctors have adopted Zeno AI in their daily work. That makes the application unique’, said Piersma, who is scientific director at the Centre of Expertise Applied Artificial Intelligence. ‘In addition, the technology is transparent and user-friendly. We look forward to its further development, so that larger target groups are reached and new AI techniques emerge in this specialism.’

SUPPORT FOR CORRECT DECISIONS

Radboudumc in Nijmegen is the first hospital to use Zeno AI at its outpatient clinic. The AI application immediately starts analysing as soon as an ENT doctor turns on the endoscope. As a result, using Zeno AI can reduce the time to diagnosis from two/three weeks (average waiting time) to the same day. Faster diagnosis of throat cancer enables a faster care plan for patients. Importantly, the technology only makes predictions based on knowledge and thus does not diagnose. Zeno AI supports the ENT doctor in making the right decision, for example when it is not immediately clear what is going on.

Zeno AI is currently going through the process of CE marking (MDR). This assesses not only clinical validation, but in particular the technical architecture and design, as well as traceability and risk management.

ENGINE OF INNOVATION

The Dutch Applied AI Award jury noticed that there is considerable innovation in the techniques behind Artificial Intelligence, creating interesting new applications. Piersma: ‘We see well-developed applications for specialist sectors this year, as well as applications with a broad societal impact.’

The award criteria on which the jury selects focus on the level of application, transparency, and uniqueness of its kind. An AI initiative additionally scores highly if a user is involved in the application. ‘The AI must really add value’, says Piersma. ‘With the Dutch Applied AI Award, we want to actively encourage innovation, so that applications arise that otherwise would not come to fruition.’

The winning 2022 initiative also lands in a nice AI ecosystem - the AI hub Amsterdam - in which Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences participates alongside other knowledge institutions and hospitals in the region.

Het idee voor de corona 1,5 meter afstand-melder ontstond toen twee jaar geleden de 1,5 meter regel werd afgekondigd. Wail ondervond dat veel mensen moeite hadden om op een respectvolle manier 1,5 meter afstand te houden. “Het klinkt zo onaardig om steeds te roepen ‘afstand houden’; daar wilde ik iets aan doen,” vertelt Wail. “Ik vond programmeren altijd al leuk en toen ik nieuwe programmeermaterialen van mijn vader kreeg, ben ik een prototype voor een corona 1,5 meter afstand-melder gaan bouwen.”

Afstand houden
Wail trok al snel de aandacht met zijn uitvinding. Hij werd geïnterviewd door het Jeugdjournaal, kwam met verschillende mensen in contact die hem hielpen een bedrijf op te zetten en werd zelfs genomineerd voor de Nationale Kinderprijs en de CSU Innovatie Award! Met zijn bedrijf, WailSalutem, wil Wail bewerkstelligen dat mensen gezond blijven, goed voor zichzelf zorgen, lief zijn voor elkaar en respectvol met elkaar omgaan. Wail: “Mijn apparaat maakt het gemakkelijker om afstand te houden. Je hoeft niet meer steeds te zeggen dat je graag afstand houdt. Dat doet het apparaat met zijn piepgeluid. En dat is fijn voor mensen die nu en in de toekomst graag afstand willen blijven houden.”

Programmeren met een Arduino
Wail wil kinderen en jongeren graag inspireren. Daarom heeft hij ook WailSalutem Foundation op gericht. Hiermee wil hij kinderen vaardigheden leren op het gebied van internet, technologie, robotica en programmeren.
