Circular City

The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) Meetups are an accessible platform to learn about and work on the SDGs in an entrepreneurial way, facilitating collaboration and exchanging knowledge. It is an opportunity to meet social entrepreneurs, SMEs, independent professionals and established organisations working toward the same goal.

In May, we'll be focusing on SDG 8: Decent Work & Economic Growth. As the global economy continues to recover from the 2008 economic crisis and global recession, we are seeing slower growth, widening inequalities, and not enough jobs to keep up with a growing labour force. That's why SDG 8 promotes sustained, inclusive and sustainable economic growth, full and productive employment and decent work for all.

- Social Finance NL | Co-founder Ruben Koekoek was educated as an economist (Cum Laude) with a focus on Development Economics and Macroeconomics. Prior to co-founding Social Finance NL, Koekoek led the Social Impact Bond efforts for ABN AMRO Bank. Together with the municipality of Rotterdam, Ruben initiated the first Social Impact Bond from continental Europe. Social Finance NL is a social enterprise that serves as in intermediary between government, service providers and impact investors in order to solve social issues more effectively. Ruben will join us to tell us more about the status of SDG 8 and about the work that Social Finance NL is doing across the globe to tackle un(der)employment.

- GreenfieldCities | Joris Benninga, Founder and CEO | GreenfieldCities (GFC) delivers sustainable solutions to mitigate forced migration. It does so by developing sustainable, safe, inclusive and productive urban areas in regions of origin of (potential) migrants. The initiative puts the creation of high-quality jobs for the local workforce at the heart of its enterprise and views entrepreneurship as a critical cornerstone to building thriving labour markets. Having started in 2016, GFC is getting ready to launch a Clean Tech Campus for 1500 people in Jordan in the year ahead together with a wide range of allies including the United Nations. Joris will join us to provide his perspective on the importance of jobs in sustainability and their Jordan pilot.

Tynke will share more about her circular products, how she extracts materials for production using urban mining, and the partnerships she developed in the process. #Action

➜ Biopolus | Kriszti Árvai-Nagy, Dutch Partnership Executive | Biopolus is a Hungary-based water innovator. Using advanced biological engineering, they’ve created a modular, expandable water treatment system for complex circular urban water treatment and management. Kriszti will tell us more about their BioMakery approach, specifically focusing on the Koningshoeven BioMakery: their first water treatment facility in the Netherlands, for which they won the water management category of the 2019 Dutch Circular Awards. #Action

Voor- en nadelen van het mede-opdrachtgever zijn bij het opzetten van je eigen verduurzaming.
Nederland moet verduurzamen. Natuurlijk kunnen we afwachten tot de overheid het ons verplicht, maar er zijn steeds meer Nederlanders die zelf het initiatief nemen om hun energieverbruik terug te brengen en huis en haard te verduurzamen. Dat gaat niet vanzelf, daar is veel kennis, kracht en kunde voor nodig. Wat zijn de voordelen? Waar loop je tegenaan? Welke inventieve ontwerpen levert het op? Wat zijn de belangrijkste lessen die je moet leren als je medeverduurzamer wordt? En wat betekent dit voor de stad en de manier van stad ontwikkelen? Een programma voor iedereen die er over nadenkt om concreet te gaan verduurzamen in huis, straat of wijk.
Medeopdrachtgeverschap
Deze aflevering is de tweede van een reeks in de serie ‘Waar begin je aan?!’ Bewoners aan het woord over medeopdrachtgeverschap en nut en noodzaak van meer invloed op de opdracht en het bouwen aan huis, buurt en stad. Komende afleveringen gaan in op mede-opdrachtgeverschap in de zorg en bij de toekomst van erfgoed. Hoe kun je als bewoner mede-opdrachtgever worden?

Bewoners in Watergraafsmeer werken al vier jaar aan een plan om lokale restwarmte te gebruiken voor verwarming van huishoudens in hun buurt. De hoeveelheid warmte die vrij komt bij het koelen van de computers in een naburig datacenter is voldoende voor wel 5.000 huishoudens, en het datacentrum wil die warmte wel leveren. Ardine Nicolaï richtte samen met een groep vrijwilligers energie-coöperatie MeerEnergie op en onderzoeken nu samen met tientallen buurtbewoners in verschillende werkgroepen, en in samenwerking met professionele partijen zoals Alliander DGO en de gemeente, hoe dat te realiseren is.

Frans Soeterbroek (de Ruimtemaker) geeft een bredere blik op het mede-opdrachtgeven. Wat levert het op als mensen meer invloed op hun huis, hun zorg, hun leefomgeving krijgen? Wie heeft daar wat aan? Waarom is de bewoners-stem belangrijk bij ontwikkelen van de stad van de toekomst?

Hoe kunnen maatschappelijk verantwoorde ondernemingen hun productie opschalen?
In ons huidige economische systeem staan mens en planeet niet centraal. Daarom zijn de afgelopen jaren tal van ondernemingen het anders gaan doen door minder vervuilende producten op de markt te brengen of een onderneming te starten die mensen boven winst zet. Hoe gaat het hen af? Waar bevinden we ons in de transitie naar een economie waar ondernemingen mens en planeet boven of gelijk aan winst stellen? Waar lopen ondernemers tegen aan bij het opschalen van hun productie of het starten van een nieuw bedrijf of project? Hoe zorg je voor genoeg financiering? Hoe moet de bedrijfsvoering aangepast worden en hoe kan onderwijs bijdragen aan de transitie? Met ondernemers, adviseurs, docenten en journalisten gaan we in gesprek over de uitdagingen van ondernemers en de rol van onderwijs. Wat is er nodig om nog een stapje zetten richting een economie waarin maatschappelijk verantwoord ondernemen de norm is?

Mark Hillen is sinds 2012 bezig met sociaal ondernemerschap, als mede-oprichter van Social Enterprise NL en Social Enterprise Lab. Hij schreef twee boeken, ‘Verbeter de Wereld, begin een bedrijf’ samen met Willemijn Verloop, en ‘Zaken die je Raken’. Hoe ver gevorderd is sociaal ondernemerschap volgens hem? Welke barrières zijn al overwonnen en welke moeten we nog overwinnen?

Ze richtte ’s wereld eerste non-profit computerbeveiliging bedrijf Radically Open Security op en zet zich nu met Nonprofit Ventures in om sociale ondernemeringen te ondersteunen. Wat is volgens Melanie Rieback nodig om van sociaal ondernemerschap de norm te maken?
Directeur en medeoprichter van MUD Jeans Bert van Son initieerde de circulaire en maatschappelijk verantwoorde denim jeans. Iedere jeans bestaat voor veertig procent uit gerecycled denim en is onder goede arbeidsomstandigheden, en van onbespoten biologisch katoen gemaakt. Helemaal bijzonder is dat de de spijkerbroek niet koopt, maar least, waardoor bezit verandert in gebruik. Waar loopt een bedrijf tegen aan die is gericht op circulaire productie?

Oprichter van CrowdfundingHub en directeur van European Centre for Alternative Finance Ronald Kleverlaan promoot al 10 jaar de mogelijkheden van crowdfunding in binnen- en buitenland door begeleiding van toonaangevende initiatieven. Hoe kunnen volgens hem alternatieve vormenvan financiering zoals crowdfunding en cryptcurrencies bijdragen aan sociaal ondernemerschap?

Petra Hoogerwerf schreef zij het boek ‘Échte Winst: in zeven stappen naar succesvol ondernemen met maatschappelijke impact’. Daarnaast is ze adviseur bij Veleda waar zij goede doelen en non-profit organisaties begeleidt op het gebied van fondsenwerving en strategie. Wat moeten volgens haar bedrijven doen om productie op te schalen zonder social en duurzame doelen uit het oog te verliezen?

Schrijver, journalist, filmmaker en socioloog Nadine Maarhuis heeft de verhalen van ongeveer honderd maatschappijvernieuwers, betekenisvolle ondernemers en wereldverbeteraars in woord en beeld gevangen. De verhalen die uit deze ontmoetingen voortkwamen zijn onder andere gepubliceerd door Follow the Money.

Docent duurzaamheid aan het Rudolf Steiner College Haarlem Simanto Dragtsma heeft een driedubbele V aanpak in zijn werk, Vertrouwen, Verbinding en Vrijheid. Hier laat hij leerlingen eigen maatschappelijk verantwoorde bedrijfsprojecten opzetten, zodat zij al vroeg kennismaken met duurzaam en sociaal verantwoord ondernemerschap. Welke rol speelt onderwijs volgens hem om van maatschappelijk verantwoord ondernemen écht de norm te maken?

Eelko Kruse is schoolleider van het econasium en docent wiskunde aan het Comenius Lyceum in Amsterdam. Met het econasium wil hij zorgen dat de persoonlijke ambities van leerlingen een centrale plek krijgen, dit zorgt volgens hem voor een betere aansluiting met het vervolgonderwijs. Zo richt het econasium door middel van projecten zich op sociale, economische, technische, culturele en milieutechnische duurzaamheid. Wat is het econasium precies, en hoe kan dit bijdragen aan de nieuwe stroom maatschappelijk verantwoord ondernemers?

CO2-compensatie, elektrisch vliegen of toch de trein: wat zijn de duurzame opties voor de wereldreiziger van nu?
Een beter milieu, dat willen we allemaal wel. Uit dat reclamespotje van vroeger weten we; dit begint bij jezelf. Dus eten we geen vlees meer, draaien we led-lampen in en kopen we minder spullen. Maar dit alles valt meteen in het niet als je tóch vliegt voor je welverdiende vakantie. Een tripje naar New York? Net zo schadelijk als het eten van duizend Big Macs. Maar de echte boosdoeners zijn de vluchten binnen Europa, met Schiphol op de derde plek als drukste vliegveld. In totaal reisden in 2017 68,4 miljoen passagiers van, naar of via Schiphol, wat neer komt op 496.747 starts en landingen afgehandeld, 3,7 procent meer dan in 2016. Daarmee zit de luchthaven net onder het plafond van 500.000 vluchten dat met de overheid en de omgeving is afgesproken. Een enorme belasting, voor een klein land als Nederland. En een pijnlijk besef voor de wereldverbeteraar. Het moge duidelijk zijn: onze vliegtrips, die moeten anders.

Ook de luchtvaartsector heeft de boodschap opgepikt en wil tot 2030 35 procent CO2-uitstoot besparen door te investeren in nieuwe vliegtuigen, snellere vliegroutes en de overstap naar de trein voor korte afstanden. Maar zijn veel duurdere tickets en minder vliegen niet de enige echte oplossingen? En hoe kunnen de budgetmaatschappijen toch die spotgoedkope vluchten blijven aanbieden? En wil je toch weg, wat zijn de duurzame opties voor de wereldreiziger van nu?

Wat gaan we doen?
Met promovendus Sociaal Gedrag en Duurzaamheid Nadja Zeiske zullen we het hebben over waarom we, ondanks dat we weten dat we het niet zouden moeten doen, we toch telkens weer dat vliegtuig pakken. Over de dilemma’s van nu en de psychologie achter (on)duurzame keuzes.
Wat zijn de alternatieven voor vliegen op de fossiele grondstof kerosine? En zijn die duurzaam? Merel Laroy van SkyNRG zal vertellen over de mogelijkheden van bio- en misschien synthetische brandstoffen in de lucht.
D66-Kamerlid Jan Paternotte is pleitbezorger van de vliegtaks, waarvan de opbrengsten eventueel kunnen worden ingezet voor groenere luchtvaart. Hij legt o.a. uit wat de situatie is in Brussel. Gaat de Europese belasting er komen? Cas van Kleef is campaigner luchtvaart bij Greenpeace, dat dit jaar het manifest Zet de luchtvaart op het juiste spoor lanceerde. Samen gaan ze met Klaas-Jeroen Terwal, manager public affairs bij KLM, en Heike Luiten, directeur NS International, in gesprek. Is het plan Slim en Duurzaam van de luchtvaartsector ambitieus genoeg? Is een goed Europees spoornetwerk een alternatief voor het vliegtuig? Is er überhaupt plaats voor vliegen in een duurzame toekomst?

Harvard University says its Architecture department is “a unique community, rich in diversity, and collaboration… where students explore today’s most creative design approaches.” This could not have been more true when its Master’s in Architecture students visited De Ceuvel — the epitome of uniqueness, diversity, and collaboration (without the quintessential ivy covered buildings).

On October 13th, Amsterdam Smart City hosted the delegation of Harvard University students who started their day by hearing about the open collective’s ecosystem from Cornelia Dinca, Amsterdam Smart City Delegations Lead and Founder of Sustainable Amsterdam. Cornelia also explained Amsterdam’s structural or strategic vision for being an “Economically Strong & Sustainable” city and how effective collaboration between the “quadruple helix” of residents, government, companies, and knowledge institutions is the key to the combined success of the economy and sustainability.

Students then participated in an expert session led by Sladjana Mijatovic who presented Circular Innovation — Linking Knowledge, Innovation, Business, and People. Sladjana’s experience as Circular Innovation Officer for the City of Amsterdam enabled her to dive deep into the many facets of the City’s multitude of projects and initiatives supporting circularity. The students were most engaged around the discussion of moving from a linear to circular economy as it pertains to the large trend of increased urbanism, and the challenges that come from redeveloping historic areas while keeping sustainability at the forefront of the planning process.

It’s one thing to hear about successful innovative circular development, however, experiencing it is another thing entirely. With this in mind, Cornelia led the group on a cycling tour through Amsterdam North – a fertile ground for creative and circular innovations.
Students wandered through the boardwalk of De Ceuvel which was constructed on the polluted soil of a former shipyard. Through a unique collaboration between architecture firm Space & Matter and sustainability consultancy Metabolic, the former industrial space was transformed into an innovative community of artists and entrepreneurs. Four years on and De Ceuvel continues to lead the way as Amsterdam’s flagship “living lab,” having launched the “Joulitte” blockchain-based energy sharing token, and a biogas boat that converts De Ceuvel’s Café organic waste into biogas and fertilizer.

From De Ceuvel, the group continued on to the Buiksloterham neighborhood to view examples of cutting-edge sustainable and circular architecture. The students were inspired by “Palais Recup” developed by the owner salvaging all sorts of materials first, and then enlisting the services of an architect to design a home from what was available — a true example of innovation, experimentation, and creativity.

The group finished off the tour at NDSM-wharf, inside a shipbuilding hangar from 1919 which has now been transformed to “Kunststad” or “Art City”. Here artists had an opportunity to build a studio of their choice, co-creating what is said to be Europe’s largest breading ground for creatives.

They say an Ivy League education can open many doors. The most important of those being the one that leads you outside to “Challenge the status quo and change things around. From waste and pollution, to up cycling and recovery.”— As stated at the entrance to De Ceuvel.

Hoe tovert de architect ruimtes om tot een beleving? Over akoestiek, perspectief en tastzin.
Een ontwerp kan perfect zijn, de beleving valt of staat met passend materiaalgebruik. Dankzij een scala aan innovatieve, duurzame en slimme materialen beschikken architecten over een uitgebreide toolbox om gebouwen te ontwerpen waar mensen graag wonen, werken en verblijven. Glas, hout, staal of juist beton; het zijn allemaal keuzes die van invloed zijn op de beleving van de ruimte. Tijdens Special Effects duiken we in de materiële wereld en onderzoeken we de invloed van materiaal op architectuur. Wat is de ultieme connectie tussen materiaal, context en ontwerp?

We gaan in gesprek met:
HOH Architecten. Dit architectenbureau maakt in haar ontwerpproces geen onderscheid tussen het ontwerpen van een gebouw, een stad of een gordijn. In elk ontwerpproces onderzoeken ze de architectuur van textiel en het surreële effect dat materialisatie kan hebben op de ruimtelijke ervaring. Freyke Hartemink deelt hun werkwijze.
van Dongen-Koschuch. Een concertzaal creëren die bezoekers het gevoel geeft een uitvergroot muziekinstrument binnen te stappen, dat is het idee achter het ontwerp van architectenbureau van Dongen-Koschuch voor Musis Sacrum in Arnhem. De zaal is bekleed met eiken panelen om het geluid optimaal door de ruimte te verspreiden. Patrick Koschuch vertelt hoe het ze gelukt is de grote schaal terug te brengen naar menselijke proporties.
Studio Petra Vonk. Ontwerper Petra Vonk lanceerde in 1990 haar Amsterdamse ontwerpstudio met een focus op het gebruik van textiel in architectuur en interieur. Door te spelen met de kenmerken van specifieke materialen en technieken creëert ze nieuwe en onverwachte concepten en toepassingen. Zo werkt ze bijvoorbeeld aan het verbeteren van akoestische eigenschappen van ruimtes door de toepassing van textiel. Hoe combineert ze visuele, tastbare en functionele eigenschappen in haar ontwerp?
Civic. Voor architectenbureau Civic is architectuur een publieke opgave. Met hun ontwerpen, van publieke gebouwen tot plekken, anticiperen ze op de ruimtelijke, maar ook op de sociale, culturele, economische en ecologische context. Onderzoek speelt hierin een grote rol, zo bouwen ze maquettes en testfragmenten in hun werkplaats om alles te testen. Ingrid van der Heijden vertelt over de rol van materialen en hun verouderingsproces.
Mélanie van der Hoorn. Haar vorige boek, Bricks & Balloons, keek naar architectuur zoals gepresenteerd in cartoons. In haar nieuwe boek Spots in Shots richt Mélanie van der Hoorn zich op de korte architectuurfilm. Niet de gladde, dure visualisaties van lege gebouwen, maar artistieke films die ons iets nieuws vertellen over architectuur.
Frank Tjepkema. In het ontwerp van de Solidaridad Village Market in Bangladesh maakt Frank Tjepkema gebruik van lokale, ambachtelijke materialen en bouwvaardigheden die de socioculturele waarde benadrukken. Hoe is hij te werk gegaan?

Welke druk zet van gas los, het veranderende klimaat, de circulaire economie en een ander vervoer op de wereld onder ons?
Wordt de stad ook drukker in de onderwereld? De ambities van de stad Amsterdam zijn groot. Zeker als het gaat om de woningbouwopgave, een gezonde leefomgeving, de energietransitie, circulaire economie en klimaatadaptatie. De vraag is hoe we deze ambities tegelijkertijd, naast elkaar en in samenhang gaan realiseren in de grond onder ons. Een integrale aanpak is noodzakelijk. Slim nadenken over een efficiënte inrichting van de ondergrond is hiervoor cruciaal. Want de ruimtelijke druk is groot en verschillende leidingen, buizen, funderingen, wortels en gebruiksfuncties concurreren met elkaar. Wat ligt er eigenlijk onder onze voeten? Kan de vervangingsopgave van de riolering en energienetwerken worden gebruikt om slimme koppelingen te realiseren? En hoe pakken we deze ambities met alle gebruikers en bewoners aan?

The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) Meetups are an accessible platform to learn about and work on the SDGs in an entrepreneurial way, facilitating collaboration and exchanging knowledge. It is an opportunity to meet social entrepreneurs, SMEs, independent professionals and established organisations working toward the same goal.

This month's Meetup will focus on SDG 5: Gender Equality. While some forms of discrimination against women and girls are diminishing, gender inequality continues to hold women back and deprives them of basic rights and opportunities. On the 31st of October, Amsterdam Economic Board is organizing the 'Gooi en Vechtstreek: Slim, Groen en Gezond' event with the aim of boosting regional cooperation in the field of circular economy. An important event, says Wimar Jaeger, alderman in Hilversum and a brand new member of the Amsterdam Economic Board: 'You connect to a network of circular ambitions and show the world you take the subject seriously.'

Is hergebruik een oplossing voor elektrisch vervoer?

Kun je in deze tijd nog iets met een door diesel aangedreven sleepboot uit 1936? Anne Kloppenborg vindt van wel, zijn bedrijf New Electric bouwde onlangs een sleepboot om, zodat het binnen de stad volledig elektrisch aangedreven kan varen en nog decennia mee kan. Eerder verbouwde hij een zilveren Jaguar tot full-electric auto. Hergebruik is de kern van de circulaire economie, maar is dit niet een hobby voor de rijken? Of is dit de oplossing voor een snelle transitie van fossiele naar elektrische mobiliteit? Wat drijft ondernemers als Kloppenborg? En wat komt kijken bij het ombouwen naar een volledig elektrisch voertuig? Aan de hand van het verhaal van New Electric gaan wij in op de vele initiatieven voor het ombouwen van fossiel aangedreven naar elektrische voertuigen.

De avond staat in het teken van de techniek en de motivatie achter de initiatieven voor hergebruik in elektrische mobiliteit. In gesprek met Anne en de overige gasten bespreken wij het belang van hergebruik voor het terugdringen van de ecologische voetafdruk en het behouden van cultureel erfgoed.

Na een gesprek met idealistische ondernemers en techneuten weet je hoe je met elektrische aandrijving een combinatiegewicht van 100 ton kan voorstuwen. Met voorbeelden uit de praktijk bespreken wij hoe deze techniek het aangezicht van de stad aan het veranderen is.

Bart Verweijen gelooft in de kracht van hergerbuik van elektrisch vervoer op water met gerenoveerde schepen. Met ZOEV City zet hij in op meer transport over Amsterdams water om de drukke straten te ontlasten.

Frans Heijn is de oprichter en voorzitter van de Verenigde Rederijen Amsterdam. Met zijn Admiraal Heijn is hij een voorvechter van het behouden van historische boten door elektrificatie.
