Digital City

People get more connected and technology becomes part of our daily life. Between 2014 and 2015 there was a 27% growth of internet traffic in Amsterdam. Eleven out of fifteen Trans-Atlantic data cables are connected with or go through Amsterdam and the AMS-IX is the second largest internet exchange point in the world. In 2016 Amsterdam was ranked second in the European Digital City Index. Do you work on a smarter city? Share your technologies here!

Brazil: City of Sorocaba is searching for Smart City collaboration

Beginning of this month I’ve visited the Town Hall of Sorocaba in Brazil. The secretaries of urban planning Mrs. Zacareli and Mr. Fioravante informed me about their current projects and ambitions around Smart City. They also shared their vision to make the municipality more sustainable and pleasant for its inhabitants. Sorocaba is looking for international collaborations.

The city of Sorocaba in the São Paulo state has 700.000 inhabitants, the metropolitan area of Sorocaba consists of 27 municipalities with a total of more than 2 million inhabitants. The industrial park boasts more than 25 million square meters and over 1,600 industries.

The city is foreseeing a growth of the municipality’s service package due to the growing metropolitan area of Sorocaba and the influx of inhabitants coming from São Paulo. Sorocaba embraces a smarter and more sustainable approach to cope with the future urban challenges.

With the recently started IPLASO ( Institute for Planning of Sorocaba ) the municipality is making a start to coordinate urban projects and unite stakeholders to share visions and implement plans.

In general, the municipality is looking for knowledge, best practices, guidance and support with enrolling their Smart City vision and sustainable urban projects within IPLASO. More specific, Sorocaba is looking for solutions to use their data better and to improve their health and municipal services.

In the Netherlands I’m supporting Sorocaba with their plans. Who wants to join?

Feel free to contact me via +31617456045 or christian.fasting@brazilservices.nl

It will be my pleasure to share my experiences in Sorocaba and Brazil with you.

Kind regards, Christian Fasting.

AMS Science for the City #8 - The autonomous city

What happens to cities and citizens when smart technologies start making their own decisions? With a.o. Carlo Ratti.

Imagine a city in which traffic lights autonomously organise the mobility flows in a city, where dynamic infrastructures know where and when to create temporary bridges during crowded events, and where smart grids independently distribute renewable energy sources. During this session of AMS Science for the City, we look at the future of our increasingly smart urban spaces. Together with special guest and AMS PI Carlo Ratti (MIT Senseable City Lab), we dive into the challenges, possibilities and prospects of senseable and autonomous cities.
What is the added value of sensing for the city of Amsterdam? Can we create fully autonomous cities? What will they look like, and what is it like to live in one?

Digital Capability Day: Reaching digital maturity and your GDPR readiness

Is it possible to develop tools that enable individuals to collectively share personal information on their own terms? And if so, how do we design these tools?

Freelance Friday - Internet and the Numbers
Celebrate the 30th anniversary of the Internet in Europe with networking and drinks.

Steven Pemberton gives Freelance Friday's annual New Year's talk and deals with all your questions on the Internet. How do we deal with the exponential growth of the Internet? How fast will your home connection be in five years' time?

This year marks the 30th anniversary of the Internet in Europe.
In 1988 the whole of Europe was connected to the whole of the USA at the immense speed of 64K bits per second. The chances are your mobile phone is now 1000 times faster than that; the connection at Amsterdam now peaks at 5.5 Tbps, which is close to 100 million times faster than in 1988.

The internet has been, and still is, getting exponentially faster; in other words, it has been regularly doubling in speed. Just like computers have been. But did you know other things have been growing exponentially as well? Like the number of universities in the world. And the number of academic journals. And the amount of light you can produce for a fixed amount of money.

How do we deal with such numbers? How fast is the internet growing? How fast will your home connection be in five years’ time?

This talk aims to help you get your head around the idea of exponential growth while wandering through subjects as diverse as Japanese characters, the film Inception, how to subtract, and a number of other apparently completely unrelated subjects.

Steven Pemberton was one of the first handfuls of people on the internet in Europe. Since then he has been continually involved with the internet, helping develop HTML and CSS, and several other web standards. He has been giving the annual New Year’s talk at Freelance Friday since 2008. “The best speaker of the year!” said one attendee.

NYC Launches Electric Vehicles Tech Challenge

Mayor Bill de Blasio and the City of New York are committed to leading in the charge against climate change. In service of that mission, on Monday we announced the latest in our NYCx Moonshot Challenges. As part of a partnership with the City of Paris, we’re launching NYC’s Moonshot Climate Action Challenge to fast-forward to a future where we replace all gas-powered vehicles in NYC! Whether you’re an entrepreneur, researcher, technologist, executive, or just someone with a good idea, I’m inviting you to participate in this challenge and be part of shaping that future. Here are the details:

Challenge participants will submit proposals for 1 or both of 2 tech categories:
Emerging technologies for charging EVs: self-charging streets, inductive/wireless charging, 350+ kW charging, connected vehicle solutions, vehicle-to-grid tech, etc.
Immediately commercializable EV charging tech: 25-150 kW charging, solar parking canopies with integrated EV charging, etc.

Up to 3 finalists from Track 1 will be awarded $20,000 each to demo their technology to the NYC Department of Transportation & Mayor’s Office of Sustainability. Up to 3 finalists from Track 2 will be able to pitch their business plan to the NYC Department of Transportation.

Only 1 winner from each track will be eligible for:
Track 1: full feature at an upcoming global NYCx event
Track 2: $20,000 to further research and develop/expand their proposal and present a live demo that brings that proposal to life (e.g. virtual reality demo, charging demo, city-scale mock-up with adoption scenarios), with a chance to have design elements of their submission included in the City’s EV charging roadmap (currently in development)

Interested? Send us your ideas by Monday 1/15/2018 5PM ET for a chance to make NYC the global leader in climate action: http://www.nyc.gov/html/nycx/climate/climateactionchallenge.html
