How do we shape the new normal? Marineterrein Amsterdam Living Lab is looking for innovative ideas to help us safely reopen our restaurants and public spaces. Join the New Normal Challenge for a chance to test your solution on the Marineterrein!

The Coronavirus crisis has transformed our lives and its impacts will continue to be felt for months, potentially years. We are only beginning to shape the “New Normal”. What impact will keeping a 1.5 meter distance away from each other have on our lives?

Marineterrein Amsterdam Living Lab (MALL) is a place to develop, test and apply solutions to global urban challenges and it’s the ideal location to bring creative ideas for our post Coronavirus life to fruition. Amsterdam Smart City is a core partner of the MALL.

With The New Normal Challenge, we are looking for other innovative ideas that can help us shape the new normal. This includes spatial, technological, social, and behavioral solutions for a better living environment.

Specifically we are looking for creative solutions on three challenges:

1. How can restaurants and cafes on the Marineterrein safely reopen and adapt to the rapidly changing governmental guidelines?
2. How can we ensure safe access and use of public space on the Marineterrein, especially during upcoming summer months when many people use it for cooling off?
3. How can we use the current corona crisis to support lasting change toward more sustainable practices in Amsterdam?

Join the Challenge!

The challenge is open to anyone with an innovative idea, including citizens, NGO’s, start-ups, SME’s and corporates. Interested parties should submit their proposal by Friday, June 5 at 19:00.

Selection Process

Following an initial evaluation the top three ideas per challenge will be invited to pitch their solution during an online event on Wednesday, June 10. A jury will select a winning idea based on the following criteria:

• How well does the solution address one or more challenges?
• How innovative, sustainable and inclusive is the solution?
• What is the economic and social impact of the solution?
• Can the solution be implemented quickly?
• Does the solution have the potential to scale-up nationally or internationally?

Prize

The winning idea per challenge will receive a free experimentation slot on Marineterrein Amsterdam for 3-6 months from June – November. The winners will also get access to the Challenge partners to develop, implement and scale their solution.

Marineterrein Amsterdam Living Lab (MALL) is a collaboration between Bureau Marineterrein, AMS Institute for Advanced Metropolitan Solutions (AMS Institute), Amsterdam Smart City and NEMO Science Museum. The main goal is to develop scalable innovations that make and keep cities liveable. At this unique location in Amsterdam, various communities in the field of research, innovation, urban development bring their expertise together to develop, test, and apply solutions to global urban challenges.

With growing numbers of pedestrians and cyclists returning to city streets, keeping a safe distance of 1.5m can be a challenge in many urban areas due to the way public space (or lack of it) has been designed.

The Social Distancing Dashboard, a project led by scientists from Delft University of Technology (TU Delft), in collaboration with the Amsterdam Institute for Advanced Metropolitan Solutions (AMS Institute), helps to raise awareness about constraints posed by the design of public space and contributes to decision making for COVID-19 related interventions in urban planning.

The Dashboard creates city maps that show on a street and neighborhood level if social distance rules can be respected when moving in public space. It offers an overview of different factors – such as the width of the footpath and location of bus stops – affecting our ability to respect social distancing rules.

The dynamic and color-coded maps are open access and available for use by e.g. policymakers, charged with making decisions on public health and city planners, tasked with making COVID-19 related interventions in the urban space. The dashboard is also intended to raise awareness amongst city residents – especially those in risk groups – who want to navigate the city streets as safely as possible.

As Covid-19 continues to wreak havoc on public health and local economies around the world, one over-looked Corona casualty has been our collective space. Here in densely populated Amsterdam we are slowly, carefully, cautiously transitioning into a new urban landscape. As a smart city architect and designer, I wanted to start exploring this new 1.5 meter unit on the Marineterrein, Amsterdam’s inner-city testbed for future living environments. In navolging van de twee succesvolle TechGrounds vestigingen in Amsterdam Nieuw-West en Zuidoost, opent TechGrounds vandaag een nieuwe vestiging in Zaanstad Poelenburg. De Nederlandse tech-hub die zich midden in kwetsbare wijken vestigt en tech-ondernemerschap en digitale vaardigheden naar kwetsbare communities en wijken brengt, werkt in Zaanstad samen met Salesforce.

De coronacrisis leidt in de Metropool Amsterdam (MRA) tot een economische schade van € 2,3 miljard per maand. De schade is het gevolg van de uitval van productie en het verlies van omzet door de maatregelen die zijn ingesteld tegen de verspreiding van het coronavirus. Wanneer deze maatregelen zouden voortduren tot 1 juni, dan krimpt de economie van de MRA in 2020 met 1,4 procent, terwijl dit jaar een groei was voorzien van 2,3 procent. De negatieve economische effecten worden sterker naarmate de maatregelen langer duren.

The corona crisis offers new perspectives for our society and its economisch. My column (in Dutch) is about how companies could make profit and strive to be regenerative at the same time. In other words: how can making profit and fitting in the doughnut economy (Kate Raworth's theory) can work together.

Because one thing has structurally changed since this crisis: nobody can say 'well this line of business can not be stopped that easy'. If it is necessary, we can keep planes on the ground and stop big parts of our economy. Not without damage to the economy, but it can be done. If we find it important enough. Juist nu is het zaak om na te denken en ons uit te spreken over een samenleving en economie na corona. Op woensdag 8 April startte daarom de grootste online crowdsourcing-actie van ons land: #Kraakdecrisis. Deze actie is opgestart door een groep jonge ondernemers die de coronacrisis zien als hét moment voor transitie. DRIFT denkt en doet mee: hoe kan de ontregeling van nu een aanzet zijn tot positieve verandering op lange termijn? Doe mee met de eerste doe-sessie op 15 april!

In this article I investigate how engagement and passion can enter again the workplace and how cities can contribute to achieving this goal. Most employees are not engaged, neither entrepreneurial. This is partly because many companies and institutions do not stimulate it of do not like the implications (sharing power). In this post I explore what they should do instead. I also elaborate on the starters and startup community and the conditions to let it thrive. Amsterdam is a good example, partly because of the city itself, its incubators and not to forget the role of the Amsterdam Smart City community.

COVID-19 has transformed the lives of EU citizens dramatically, in a way that was not even possible to imagine just a month ago. Cities are in lockdown and health services are put under extreme pressure and pushed beyond their limits. Yet in the time of crisis, innovations are emerging that are saving lives and protecting livelihoods. Many of these involve new uses of technology, implemented by local actors at city and regional level.

To help cities navigate the current crisis and implement appropriate responses, the European Commission’s Intelligent Cities Challenge is launching a wider support package for COVID-19 to facilitate learning and the sharing of best practices on effective city-led interventions from European and global cities.

As a first step, we have organised two city-focused interactive webinars to learn, exchange practises and support city administrations. In this event, we will explore the pandemic and effective responses through expert perspectives, good city initiatives and open discussion. Topics include responses to health risks, interventions on economic impacts and overall strategies for effective management and preparation.

Het Bureau Marineterrein Amsterdam ging in gesprek met Nina Tellegen (Directeur, Amsterdam Economic Board) en Leonie van den Beuken (Programma Directeur, Amsterdam Smart City) over dit thema.

Een slimme, groene en gezonde metropoolregio Amsterdam, daar is het de Board om te doen. Daarvoor is het nodig om naar de toekomst te kijken, weet algemeen directeur Nina Tellegen. ‘Wij ontwikkelen scenario’s die in kaart brengen wat er in de toekomst mogelijk gaat gebeuren. Het delen van data wordt bijvoorbeeld steeds belangrijker, maar hoe zorgen we dat dat op een ethisch verantwoorde manier gebeurt, bijvoorbeeld in de zorg? Aan de hand van zo’n vraag schakelen wij ons netwerk in om partijen te vinden die daar een antwoord op kunnen vinden.’

Transities
In de Board zitten burgemeesters en wethouders, raad-van-bestuurleden van grote bedrijven en collegevoorzitters van kennisinstellingen. Dit stelt Nina in staat om op hoog niveau partijen bij elkaar te brengen en samen te werken aan grote transities. ‘De board heeft als onafhankelijke partij nergens een belang bij en heeft dus de ideale positie om overheden en organisaties bij elkaar te brengen’, zegt Nina. ‘Binnen de zes grootstedelijke uitdagingen waar onze focus op ligt signaleren wij trends waarmee we aan de slag gaan om samen de metropoolregio van de toekomst te realiseren.’

Toekomstig voordeel?
Dat trends ook plotseling kunnen ontstaan, blijkt eens te meer nu het coronavirus de wereld in zijn greep houdt. Nina: ‘Digitalisering van het werk was al sterk gaande maar nu veel mensen thuiswerken heeft dit nog meer een vlucht genomen. Dat heeft nadelen, maar mensen komen er ook achter dat ze ineens meer tijd overhouden nu ze niet van hot naar her hoeven te fietsen voor afspraken. Het is interessant om te onderzoeken of we hiermee in de toekomst ons voordeel kunnen doen en efficiënter kunnen gaan werken.’

Data delen
Ook het delen van data is in deze tijden toegenomen en ook daar signaleert Nina een trend. ‘In sommige landen monitoren overheden coronapatiënten om te kijken of ze thuis blijven. Onder het mom van “dit is nu even belangrijker” worden privacyregels geschonden. Morele ethische bezwaren worden tijdens een crisis als deze aan de kant geschoven. Wat betekent dit voor de verdere bestrijding van corona en hoe gaan we hier in de toekomst mee om? En, niet onbelangrijk, hoe zetten we het delen van data juist in om die bestrijding te verbeteren? Belangrijke vraagstukken om met overheden, wetenschappers en techbedrijven op te lossen.’

Laagdrempelig
Het zijn grote vragen voor de lange adem, maar ook nu zijn er genoeg vraagstukken waarbij samenwerking uitkomst kan bieden. Daarom werd in 2009 het programma Amsterdam Smart City (ASC) gestart. De Board is nu een van de partners van ASC. ‘Waar de Board op hoog niveau samenwerkingen aangaat, hebben wij een bottom-upbenadering’, zegt Leonie van den Beuken, programmadirecteur van ASC. ‘Wij bieden een platform waar mensen zich kunnen melden als ze voor hun vraagstukken met andere partijen in de regio willen samenwerken of ondersteuning nodig hebben.’

Kennis delen
Het gaat bij ASC vooral om initiatieven waarbij de burger centraal staat. Denk hierbij bijvoorbeeld aan het verkoelen van de stad met blauw-groene daken. Ook werken diverse partijen nu samen aan de herontwikkeling van het centrum van Hoofddorp zodat er duurzame energie komt voor de toekomstige bewoners en ondernemers. ‘Wij willen lopende projecten aanpakken door partijen met elkaar te verbinden’, aldus Leonie. ‘Door kennis te delen kom je samen sneller tot een oplossing. Waarom apart van elkaar het wiel uitvinden als het ook samen kan?’

Besmettingsgevaar detecteren
Deze snelle aanpak werpt ook tijdens de coronacrisis zijn vruchten af. Leonie: ‘Het Rode Kruis had moeite om mondkapjes snel op de juiste plaats te krijgen. PostNL is dan een partij die, ondanks de enorme drukte, toch bereid is dit op te lossen. Een goed voorbeeld van hoe samenwerking direct van waarde kan zijn.’ Een ander voorbeeld zijn mobiliteitssystemen die worden ingezet om drukte bij de Johan Cruijff ArenA en de Ziggo Dome te monitoren. ‘Dit is ontstaan uit een samenwerking die bij ASC is opgezet’ zegt Leonie. ‘Die technologie wordt op dit moment ingezet in Italië om verkeersstromen naar mobiele coronatestlocaties in de gaten te houden. Zo kan er gezorgd worden dat mensen die er moeten zijn er makkelijk kunnen komen en ander verkeer wordt met een alternatieve routebeschrijving juist weggeleid. Dit wordt nu ook voor Nederland verkend, bijvoorbeeld om verkeersstromen naar bossen en stranden in de gaten te houden. Zo kan er op tijd aan de bel worden getrokken als het ergens te druk wordt en er een hoger risico op besmettingsgevaar dreigt. Zo gebruiken we bestaande technologie om actuele problemen op te lossen.’

Samenwerkingsverbanden
Op het Marineterrein, waar samenwerking hoog in het vaandel staat, zijn beide organisaties als een vis in het water. De Board heeft al samenwerkingsverbanden met Growth Tribe, Codam, Digital Society School, AMS Institute en NEMO. ASC is mede-oprichter van Marineterrein Amsterdam Living Lab en werkt ook nauw samen met bovengenoemde partijen. Daarnaast heeft ASC innovaties van bijvoorbeeld Ecocoin in de expositieruimte staan. Daarnaast zijn Nina en Leonie van plan om met de gehele community van het Marineterrein de handen ineen te slaan voor een nieuwe samenwerking: inkopen met impact.

Inkopen met impact
‘Duurzamer worden kan op allerlei manieren en een daarvan is inkoop’, vertelt Leonie. ‘Nu bestellen veel communityleden hun kantoorspullen, papier en boodschappen nog apart. Als we dit samen organiseren kunnen we bovendien het hele logistieke proces emissievrij maken. Dan maken we samen echt een verschil. Hetzelfde geldt voor de inkoop van energie of bijvoorbeeld kantoormeubilair. Zo kunnen we samen met onze inkoopkracht een verandering in gang zetten die op termijn echt iets teweeg kan brengen, zeker op grote schaal.’

Hét platform voor alle Amsterdammers die elkaar helpen tijdens de coronacrisis.

Wil jij iets doen voor jouw buurt, wijk of stad in tijden van corona? Gemeente Amsterdam wil alle mooie initiatieven die nu ontstaan versterken en een podium bieden. Zij doen dit op het nieuwe platform: Wij Amsterdam. Dit is dé plek waar initiatiefnemers en vrijwilligers elkaar kunnen vinden. Op dit moment staat de teller al op 144 (!) initiatieven.

Voor wie is Wij Amsterdam?

Wij Amsterdam is voor alle Amsterdammers die elkaar helpen tijdens de coronacrisis. Amsterdammers met mooie initiatieven, Amsterdammers die graag een steentje bijdragen, en Amsterdammers die opzoek zijn naar hulp. Zij kunnen elkaar vinden op dit platform. Samen versterken we elkaar!

We connect changemakers around the world who are tackling the most important issues of our time. We always place people and citizens central in our approach. We do this together with partners who have the expertise to not only engage but co-create with citizens. Now during the corona crisis a lot of hopeful initiatives sparked and blossomed within our network. We compiled a list of some of the initiatives or inspirations that we discovered.

Free parcel delivery of masks, gloves and goggles - PostNL

The Red Cross launched a central collection campaign for protective equipment against the corona virus such as masks, gloves and goggles. Due to the outbreak of the corona virus, there is a shortage of these resources. With a central fundraising campaign, the Red Cross takes on national coordination so that the resources end up where they are needed the most. And PostNL ensures that the parcels can be sent to the Red Cross for free!

Individuals or entrepreneurs who want to hand in materials can report to the Red Cross. The Red Cross determines whether the materials offered meet the official requirements and provides the donor with the free reply number. The package is then transported by PostNL to the Red Cross as soon as possible.

A compassion platform in times of corona – Toon Jansen

Toon Jansen, CityMaker at Wild Project, stipulates the usefulness and necessity of a compassion platform in times of corona. He is looking at possibilities to create and organize an online compassion contact platform. A place where people can connect to other people to chat on the phone, Skype, or other apps. He’s looking for ideas and people who can help him out!

Do it yourself: Smart Gardening edition – by Waag (in Dutch)

In the coming weeks, Waag will share experiments with instructables that can be performed in your own home, garden and kitchen. In this way they want to tackled boredom together with learning by doing. Last week the Smart Gardening edition was launched. Upcoming weeks more intructables will be published.

Future in time of Corona – what kind of region do we want to be? – Amsterdam Economic Board (in Dutch)

Nina Tellegen (Director of the Amsterdam Economic Board) wrote a blog raising questions on what kind of region we want to be in the future. What flaws do we see in our current economy? What alternatives do we have? How can we, especially now, use Green Deals to structurally better the future? And what investments are needed to create a smart, green and liveable region? The corona crisis can create a momentum to reflect and look forward into the future.

Life long Living – Kennisland (in Dutch)

Leven Lang Leven (Life Long Living) is a movement to create a new, positive movement around aging. A movement that consists of innovators who are looking at nursing care in an innovative way, who have different ideas about what it may look like and want to implement. The corona crisis bring a lot of concerns; about the people you love, the elderly. Share your experience around COVID-19 information to inspire global leaders – OpenIDEO (in English)

How might we rapidly inform and empower communities around the world to stay safe and healthy during the corona outbreak? OpenIDEO is currently coordinating with global response authorities who want to make sure people have actionable, relevant information around COVID-19. They like to share a range of experiences from around the world, showing how people are accessing information: what’s working well to motivate behaviour change, what isn’t working, and what feels missing.

CURA (Connected Units for Respiratory Ailments) aims to convert shipping containers into plug-in Intensive-Care Pods for the COVID-19 pandemic. The units could be as fast to mount as a hospital tent, but as safe as an isolation ward, thanks to biocontainment with negative pressure. The first unit – whose open-source design has been initiated by an international task force of architects, engineers, doctors, military experts and NGOs and is open to further contributions - is currently being built in Milan, Italy, with the sponsorship of UniCredit.
