Startup in Residence Amsterdam launches a new programme on the themes of sustainability and mobility!

Registration closes on August 11, 2020.

The City of Amsterdam is once again looking for the best start-ups, scale-ups, innovative SMEs, and social entrepreneurs with creative and innovative solutions for the city’s mobility and sustainability issues. Solutions are sought for a wide range of topics, from 'emission-free recreational boats' and 'circular renovation' to 'inclusive mobility' and 'local food logistics'. Like previous years, this edition also has the so-called "wild card challenge" for both themes. If entrepreneurs have good ideas and solutions that are not described in one of the issues, they can register for the wildcard. Today the City of Amsterdam published the new Strategy Amsterdam Circular 2020-2025. In the next 5 years this strategy and the related implementation programme will guide us towards a circular capital in 2050. Not only do we want to be sustainable within our city walls and improve local employment. We also want to significantly reduce our footprint which our consumer behaviour causes in other places in the world. Like the depletion of natural recources and CO2-emissions in other countries where our consumer goods are being produced right now. But also to improve working conditions of people who are responsible for the production of our clothes and electronics in that same countries.

Furthermore, the City published a Monitor for the circular economy. A tool which will track and trace (raw) materials from the moment they come into our city till they will be discharged and (hopefully) reused.

With the world's first City Doughnut (developed by Kate Raworth) we will monitor our progress towards a circular city. We will challenge ourselves on ecological and social themes, both local and global.

The municipality of Amsterdam and Uber have reached agreements on traffic safety, independent research, data sharing and sustainability, and have laid down these agreements in a ‘Social Charter’.

This is the outcome of the Uber Task Force that was formed at the beginning of the year, following a series of accidents in the Amsterdam area involving chauffeurs who had been driving for Uber at that moment.

Alderman Sharon Dijksma: “The rise of courier services like Uber has rapidly changed the taxi market in recent years, and raised concerns about an uneven playing field on the Amsterdam taxi market. The municipality strives to maintain a level playing field, and it regards the agreements that have been made with Uber as an important step in that direction, together with current national and local regulations and the new municipal taxi policy that is currently under development.

I’d like to thank the task force chair Rob van Holten and all the other participants for all their work, their constructive attitude towards these discussions, and the results they have achieved.”

Traffic safety
One of the agreements was that Uber would join the Traffic Safety Coalition (Verkeersveiligheidscoalitie) before the end of the year. The members of this alliance adhere to collective agreements on safe smartphone use in traffic and work together on other measures to make traffic safer. It was also agreed that Uber would take account of traffic safety in developing its financial incentives for loyal chauffeurs.

Uber plans to implement its existing face verification system in Europe in order to prevent the fraudulent use of chauffeur accounts. The company agreed to periodically inform the municipality on the status of the introduction of this technology in the Netherlands. With regard to sustainability, the deal included an agreement that Uber would make at least 750 emission-free vehicles available through the app by 31 December 2020.

Independent research
It was also agreed that Uber would work with an academic institute (to be determined) to launch an independent study into the job satisfaction, earnings, flexibility and working hours of chauffeurs using the Uber app before the end of the year, with recent research by Oxford University into London chauffeurs serving as an example. Uber has undertaken to discuss the design of this study with the municipality, and to make its outcomes public.

Niet permanente groei en de homo economicus, maar sociale en ecologische duurzaamheid zouden de leidende principes voor het economische denken van de 21e eeuw moeten zijn, aldus de Britse econoom Kate Raworth.

Het donutmodel. Een economisch model waar groei niet langer centraal staat. Een model dat eerlijker en socialer is.
Het idee van de donut is vrij simpel: iedereen moet er in passen. Mensen, dieren, de aarde, iedereen. Als je enkel naar de vorm van een donut kijkt, dan zie je twee cirkels. Een kleine cirkel in het midden en een grote cirkel aan de buitenkant. Voor een economie zonder teveel ongelijkheid tussen rijk en arm én zonder te veel van onze planeet te vragen, moet er beleid zijn dat ervoor zorgt dat iedereen tussen de twee cirkels blijft. In het deeg van de donut, zeg maar.
Heel specifiek zit het zo: De kleinste cirkel stelt een sociale ondergrens voor. Niemand zou hier buiten mogen vallen, want zit je onder deze ondergrens dan kom je tekort aan basisbehoeften. De grote cirkel staat voor wat we van onze planeet vragen. Daar zit ook een grens aan (denk aan klimaatverandering).

De Donut als denkkader
De Donut geeft ons een heel nuttig denkkader. De transitie naar een duurzame samenleving kan niet alleen vanuit ondernemerschap en burgers komen, ook overheid en politiek moeten een bijdrage leveren vanuit de verantwoordelijkheid om een beter Nederland en een betere wereld te creëren. De Donut-theorie heeft een sterke connectie met de Duurzaamheidsdoelen (SDGs).

Waarom een donuteconomie model voor Amsterdam?
De gemeente Amsterdam heeft besloten om samen te werken met Kate Raworth en Circle Economy om het eerste donuteconomie model voor de stad te ontwikkelen. Met de donut kan Amsterdam de stad van de toekomst opnieuw maken en vormen.
De donut stelt Amsterdam in staat een holistische visie voor een circulaire economie te creëren, relevante ontwikkelrichtingen te ontwerpen en de voortgang daarvan te meten. Het model geeft inzicht in de dynamiek tussen grondstofstromen en milieu- en sociale kwesties. Het toont hoe nauw alles met elkaar is verbonden in een samenleving. Ook helpt het negatieve (bij-)effecten bij de implementatie van een circulaire economie te voorkomen.

Wat we doen
De Gemeente Amsterdam werkt aan de digitale stad. We geloven dat Amsterdammers daarover net zulke goede of soms betere ideeën hebben dan ambtenaren. Daarom gaan we op 5 september het gesprek met aan! De digitale stad is voor en van iedereen. Daarom willen we dat de expertise van Amsterdammers over data een plek krijgt in de datastrategie van het college.

In die strategie leggen we vast hoe we omgaan met open data, hoe we de zeggenschap over persoonsgegevens van Amsterdammers regelen en hoe andere partijen dan de gemeente moeten omgaan met data in de stad. Ook leggen we vast wat de rol van de gemeente en andere overheden is t.o.v. andere overheids en niet-overheids partijen.

In deze bijeenkomst vragen we u om mee te werken aan de datastrategie van de Gemeente Amsterdam. Wat is het belangrijkst? Wat mist? Wat moet er echt in? Welke waarden moeten we nastreven met onze datastrategie?

Programma
Tijdens de bijeenkomst geven we een toelichting op de kaders van de strategie en de Agenda Digitale Stad. Vervolgens gaan we gezamenlijk aan de slag met vragen als:
- Hoe moet de gemeente omgaan met data over Amsterdammers?
- Hoe werken we in de stad samen tussen gemeente, bedrijven en samenleving met data over de stad?
- Wat is een principiële en werkbare open data strategie?
- Welke gegevens mogen in Amsterdam verzameld, door wie en waarom?
