Amsterdam 1000 Jaar

Lunchlezing
Dinsdag 10 oktober 12:30 – 13:30
Circular expo (voormalige herstelling/plaza), stadhuis

In 2025 bestaat Amsterdam 750 jaar.

In Repair: towards a post-throwaway society

Featured image

What would society look like if we assigned a central role to repair? And what happens if we see repair as more than a quick fix? The symposium ‘In Repair: towards a post-throwaway society’ builds on recent studies of repair, which frame the concept in a much broader context.

Activities like mending, renovating, healing, rehabilitating, revitalizing, recovering, curing or hacking help us deal with problems in a social, sustainable, and resourceful way. During this evening we explore how repair thinking could set directions for a post-throwaway society. A society in which imperfection, broken systems, relations and objects are welcomed rather than shunned; a logic of breakdown bridges past, present and future; and even tax might shift from labour to natural resource use.

KEYNOTE
Prof. Steven Jackson (coordinator of the NSF Repair, Maintenance, Sustainability research program at Cornell University), introducing ‘broken world thinking’

SPEAKERS
Femke Groothuis, director of Ex’Tax, Prof. dr. Ellen Rutten, coordinator of the Sublime Imperfections NWO research program at UvA, dr. Yngvar Steinholt (Tromso University), curator and Repair Society initiator Joanna van der Zanden.

Doors open from 7:30pm
Start at 8:00pm

The symposium is hosted by the Amsterdam School for Cultural Analysis, the University of Amsterdam, Spring House and Repair Society.

Smart home and smart living: REQUEST FOR EXAMPLES IN AMSTERDAM (and around)

CAN YOU HELP ME WITH EXAMPLES?
For a visit in Singapore, I promised that would try to get some info from companies or people involved in examples in and around Amsterdam. So, that is why I ask for info about concrete examples smart home/living. I most certainly will mention the name of your company and/or you if I use the info (and tell yuo if used).

Apart from the general interest I have since I am also CTO at Amstelveen, where we might want to do something in this area as well. But, that is no rush at the moment :)

So can you send me some information about examples: maybe a short description (Word or PDF) and an URL for more info. Mail me please on tfv2103@gmail.com. My australian number (I am available the next 4 hours; after that I am in the plain) is: 0481184872

Topics that I really like to know from your example:
- where is and since when the smart home/living?
- by whom, for whom made/realised?
- what is it about? Why is it or what makes it smart?
- results: i.e. which: i.e. some learningpoints in realisation and what added value already visible (i.e. advantages compared with more traditional homes/living, savings etc)?

And maybe, if possible, as well an idea of
- needed time and effort to realise;
- costs and savings.
- riscs.

Please mail me on tfv2103@gmail.com.

I work at the society of Amsterdam (within CTO) and I am CTO in Amstelveen. So, apart from the need now, I also do have a general interest to see what we can do in Amstelveen perhaps as well. C for more info about me at linkedin: https://www.linkedin.com/in/theoveltman/

Thanks for trying!
