Circular City

Moving from a linear to a circular economy means minimising the waste and pollution by reducing, recycling and reusing. The City of Amsterdam aims to redesign twenty product- or material chains. The implementation of material reuse strategies has the potential to create a value of €85 million per year within the construction sector and €150 million per year with more efficient organic residual streams. Amsterdam set up an innovation program on the circular economy; www.amsterdamsmartcity.com/circularamsterdam. By converting waste into electricity, urban heating and construction materials, the Amsterdam Electricity Company generates 900 kWh per 1000 kg of waste. 75% of the sewage system is separated for waste and rain water and the silt which remains after treating waste water is converted into natural gas. Share your innovative concepts and ideas on circular economy here.

The Road to Barcelona - The Interviews Part 6: RecyQ Zero Waste International

Featured image

The Smart City Expo World Congress in Barcelona is getting closer! Next week the Holland Pavilion will be filled with Dutch companies. One of them is the start-up RecyQ, working on the circular economy. We talked to Richard Severin.

How does RecyQ work?

Richard: ‘RecyQ makes more from waste by combining the hyperlocal bottom-up approach with technological possibilities. Our business is to get people to become more of waste problems and show them that waste separation is very useful. Together with our partners, amongst others the City of Amsterdam, we set up a zero waste platform for people in Amsterdam to separate waste more easily. People can separate paper, plastics, glass and textiles in our store or in containers. We measure the amount and in exchange people get a crypto token with which they can buy stuff in local stores. Besides that, we show people through our app how much CO2 they saved. We do not only make sure there is less waste, we also transform waste into new products. For local communities, we are closing the loop of raw materials.’

How do residents react?

‘The responses we get from citizens are very positive. People see the future of sustainability happening in their neighbourhoods. We show people how to contribute to a better world and tackle climate change hands on. It makes the circular economy more visible to residents. Of course, not everybody is willing to join us, but we focus on the people who are open to our ideas and care about the planet we leave behind to our children. They will tell their neighbours about it. This way we get a lot of positive attention! And of course it helps that people get a reward for separating waste, especially for those in a less fortune financial position.’

Do you have any plans to scale up?

‘Yes, it is very important to show other countries and cities the value case for combining waste separation and reusing materials with smart city technology! We were asked by a few parties to investigate whether our waste management and recycling project could work in the rest of the world as well. We already presented in New York City and at the Asian Development Bank. We are thinking of setting up feasibility studies for other cities. Then cities can choose which parts of our zero waste menu they want to take into development. In the Netherlands we already did such a study for Amsterdam Zuidoost, resulting in the venture Zero Waste Zuidoost and there are some opportunities in other Dutch cities. These are the bigger urban cities in the Netherlands because in the smaller areas the waste and recycling problem is not as big. The Netherlands ranks top 5 in Europe when it comes to waste separation, but bigger cities are not doing so well. Scaling up for us is also part of the reason why we are going to Barcelona!’

Investment Ready Program 2018 - APPLICATIONS CLOSED

Featured image

Looking for the right investor? Learn to think like one! Apply before 3 Dec 2017 at http://bit.ly/IRP2017. You could become of one the circular startups joining our 12 December selection event. Please note that this is a closed event for the selected startups.

WHY JOIN INVESTMENT READY?

The Investment Ready Program, whose main partner is ING Netherlands, is a five-month peer learning-based accelerator for circular economy solutions. It consists of 12 training days during which we guide you through a systematic review of your business model, strategy and team in order to help them craft a validated growth and investment plan.

This accelerator culminates in a Demo Day, during which the participants pitch to our network of purpose-driven impact investors and funds. Our alumni have collectively raised nearly 8.5 million euro.

What makes the program unique is that, instead of a jury, entrepreneurs themselves crown the program’s winner by ranking each other on fixed criteria. This proven, fully transparent peer-reviewing model generates an intensive learning process: participants engage in a productive feedback cycle and get in-depth knowledge of the other entrepreneurs’ ventures.

Our peer learning model has even helped several of the participants decide to start business collaborations with their peers upon the program’s completion.

WHAT RECENT INVESTMENT READY ALUMNI SAY:

Gert van Vugt, Co-founder and CEO, Sustainer Homes: "We were a building company when we started the Investment Ready Program but our coach helped us reorient towards being a ‘software’ business, which sells the design to contractors. This major pivot in our model made us focus on what we’re good at. And thanks to Investment Ready, we received financing from Triodos Bank. We also got the chance to connect to like-minded entrepreneurs, such as fellow participants MgAubel. We’re now exploring the opportunity to kickstart a modular office in their eco materials factory and simultaneously run an experiment for a bigger project."

Anja Cheriakova, Co-founder and CEO, BinBang: "We’re very happy to have been part of the Investment Ready Program, which is the best push when you’re in the scale-up phase. Thanks to our pitch at the Demo Day, we secured meetings with 3 investors and are well on our way to raise our target of €500,000. We also connected to entrepreneurs we are collaborating with, as each other’s customers. For instance, we’re helping fellow Investment Ready participants Kitchen Republic separate organic waste at their food startup incubator, and eco-materials enterprise MgAubel better deal with their office waste collection".

Smart Data, Smart City #5 - Digitization in the Circular Economy Transition

Featured image

The Amsterdam Metropolitan Area (AMA) wants to grow into a fully circular (wasteless) region by 2050. To become circular, we have to use our raw materials over and over again. Throwing away an item, for example in construction works, is seen as a loss of value. However, a lot of individual actors in the value chains don't feel or see this loss of value. Because of a lack of information, they often don’t know where potential reusable materials can be found. We assume that making this data available through digital solutions will give the circular transition the boost it needs.

The City of Amsterdam, on behalf of the AMA, considers to issue a competition and invites frontrunners, innovative players and visionaries to come up with ideas, a vision and a mars route to boost circular activity in the region and far beyond.

New insights, data and transparency of this data on the value of materials are key to transition into a circular economy. Join the conversation in this interactive session about the possibilities of digitization for the circular economy. Sign up here via the button!

Smart Data, Smart City event series

In the Smart City, citizens, data and technology are important enablers. That is why Amsterdam Smart City and Datalab join forces to organize six ‘Smart Data, Smart City’ events in 2017. On November 2nd 2017, it is time for number 5 in these series! This time we will also provide input for the Amsterdam Metropolitan Area Circular Economy competition. This competition aims to find solutions to close resource loops in the Amsterdam Metropolitan Area at a large scale through the application of digital tools & data.

On November 2, 2017 we would like to further investigate the role of data and digital applications to close (industrial) waste cycles. We would like to hear your input and use this to optimize the completion! Do you have ideas on how the digitization can play a role in the transition towards the circular economy? Smart Cities have to be Clean Cities.

Featured image

Globally there are over 1.5 Billion Unsecured wheelie bins, these bins are massively concentrated in cities.
Wheelie bins are the #1 cause of litter pollution and cause many environmental and health problems. This occurs when bins are blown over, knocked over, or over filled, the result is huge amounts of rubbish escaping into our environment, rivers and oceans. Pollution from wheelie bins cause detrimental effects to animals, wildlife, ocean life and to our planet as a whole.
Every year, 13 million tonnes of plastic and rubbish leak into our oceans, the majority of this pollution comes from Unsecured wheelie bins.
All of this toxic plastic that is in our oceans is being eaten by fish, the plastic cannot be digested and ends up stuck in the animals gut and leaks into their flesh. We in turn eat the tainted fish, so the plastic is getting into our food chain.
The negative effects caused to humans is not yet known but we do know that it can cause brain damage in fish so can you even imagine what it’s doing to us?
In the UK over 1 million sea birds die from ingesting plastic that they think is food, it is also eaten by animals, mammals, and other wildlife causing illness and death. Even the ocean life and land animals that don’t eat the plastic are effected as they get wrapped up, caught in and strangled by all different types of plastic waste that are not properly disposed of, or are not properly secured.
Unsecured wheelie bins provide an abundance of easy access food for animals, birds, rodents, and wildlife. The odours emitted by partially open compost/food waste wheelie bins attract these animals and in many cities this leads to rodent and rat infestations causing the spread of germs and disease. Once a rat infestation has occurred it is difficult to get rid of the rodents as they multiply and make a new home for themselves.
Litter pollution in cities has massive negative impacts on tourism and business, as well as a negative social impact on the cities inhabitants who witness this scourge on their doorstep every day. People who live in areas that are consistently untidy eventually get used to the eyesores and it becomes the norm for them and their area. This type of problem is hard to reverse as morale is destroyed and people stop staking responsibility for the area often passing it off as someone else’s problem. Tourism will suffer because when tourist come to visit a city, they expect it to be clean and pristine, this is not the case in cities around the world where tourists visit and are appalled by the amount of rubbish they see on streets. These tourist will not come back, and in areas where tourism is the biggest income stream, this is simply not going to do.
Businesses also suffer from untidy or even dirty areas, both indoors and out, nothing turns customers away faster than the sight of flies, bugs and rodents that are attracted to the odour coming from a large number of wheelie bins that are left unsecured on their premises. There was recently a post on social media of a rodent inside a deli counter nibbling on the pre-packed food, whilst the video was regarded by some as “cute” (with regards to the little mouse), it is most definitely not “cute” to be sharing lunch with a rodent! This video no doubt closed the premises by Food Health and Safety authorities and cost the business a huge amount of money. The visit by the mouse was most likely due to improperly presented food waste and the odour of such which lured the mouse into the restaurant.
Our cities are becoming smarter cities every day, but unless our cities are clean and litter free, we are going to face massive problems. Now that our cities are growing in population the amount of litter pollution rapidly increasing, so these problems are getting far worse. It’s time to put a stop to wheelie bin pollution before it becomes uncontrollable. People have been attacked by seagulls looking for food inland, due to the amount of accessible waste that is luring them in. Governments are under a huge financial burden when it comes to litter with recorded spending of over 1 billion GBP every year in the UK cleaning up litter.

Plastic is one of the worst threats to our planet at this time, it is seeping into our environment and in the end everyone on the planet will suffer.
Most of these problems can be eradicated or at least massively reduced by securing bins and there is a business in Ireland that have an innovative solution that will combat litter pollution in our cities, our environment and in our oceans, creating a cleaner greener city and future for our planet and all its inhabitants.
This solution is called BinStrap, it is simple, clever, affordable and very effective at reducing litter pollution.
Binstrap works by keeping the lid of a wheelie bin lid sealed and secure, so in the event that the bin is blown or knocked over the lid will remain shut keeping all the contents inside the bin and not strewn all over the surrounding area.
BinStrap will also keep out animals, birds, rodents, flies and wildlife, reducing horrible messes and protecting the animals and birds from ingesting harmful plastic. Securing bins with BinStrap will also massively reduce environmental and ocean pollution, reduce government clean up cost, boost tourism and business. This will have a positive social impact on inhabitants and people coming to work or visit the city as there will be less accessible food waste and odours associated with this. The benefits for businesses, the government and the cities inhabitants are enormous and would be a fantastic overall addition to the Smart Cities ethos.
Cities will not just be Smart Cities they will be Clean Cities.

Amsterdam’s Environmental Saviour: The Circular Economy

Saving Energy And Reducing CO2 Is Not Enough For This High-Tech City

Raw materials are a finite resource. As the number of industries which rely on these resources increases (e.g. metals for smartphones and tablets) so does the number of consumers. Not only will we start running out of these materials in the coming decades, but the processes involved in their extraction and manufacturing are often harmful to workers, citizens and the environment.

To rely on raw materials is not economically viable in the long term. As stocks run low, the market for the resource becomes increasingly volatile. Every country in the world trades its raw materials, so if one of these links can no longer deliver, the whole supply chain is affected. By 2050, the Dutch government wants the Netherlands to run completely on reusable raw materials. So the city of Amsterdam is testing out a solution: the circular economy.

In Repair: towards a post-throwaway society

Featured image

What would society look like if we assigned a central role to repair? And what happens if we see repair as more than a quick fix? The symposium ‘In Repair: towards a post-throwaway society’ builds on recent studies of repair, which frame the concept in a much broader context.

Activities like mending, renovating, healing, rehabilitating, revitalizing, recovering, curing or hacking help us deal with problems in a social, sustainable, and resourceful way. During this evening we explore how repair thinking could set directions for a post-throwaway society. A society in which imperfection, broken systems, relations and objects are welcomed rather than shunned; a logic of breakdown bridges past, present and future; and even tax might shift from labour to natural resource use.

Beyond Green - 5 Steps to circularity in textiles – Amsterdam, 20 Oct 2017

Featured image

The 2017 edition of Beyond Green cuts through the noise, the pledges and the ambitions — in short, the long-standing blah blah surrounding sustainability in the fashion industry, and moves straight to practice. We will take students and industry on a 5-step journey into circularity and introduce you to the latest tools, innovations, and know-how that you need to challenge the status quo.

Title: Beyond the Blah Blah: 5 Steps to circularity – Beyond Green 2017
Location: HEMA Atrium, Amsterdam, The Netherlands
Date: 20, October, 2017
Registration: https://circle-economy.com/beyondgreen2017
While the ‘why’ of circularity is generally understood, the ‘how’ remains largely unanswered.

Beyond Green is all about two things; inspiration and action

Inspiration: Hear from the circular innovators, trailblazers and business mavericks who are redesigning the future of fashion. Each speaker will give their unique insight into one of our 5 steps.
Action: Put your heads together with fellow experts, brands, and the next generation of fashion professionals to hack and solve the challenges that brands put forward.

ABOUT BEYOND GREEN
Beyond Green is an annual symposium that uses the collective power of students and industry to design the future of fashion and tackle critical issues throughout the fashion system. It started in 2005 at the Amsterdam Fashion Institute (AMFI) and since 2016 has been a collaborative initiative between Circle Economy and AMFI.
